So last week I played against Mike. Finally a fantasy player with enough stones to bring it! J/K
I know the rules and my army pretty well, and Mikes army had some weak points I was able to take advantage of. I'm pretty happy with my list but wanted to drum up some fantasy discussion and get y'alls thoughts on it.
This list has a few tweaks to the list I took against Mike, but very few.
2500
Lords & Heroes
Slaughtermaster, Level 4, General
Fencers Blades (WS 10 AHW), Glittering Scales (-1 to hit, LA), Greedy Fist (+1 Str, 6+ ward, wizards hit lose levels per hit, magic weapon attacks saved by the ward are turned into mundane for the battle)
This Slaughter master is at best hit on a 5 in combat, 6 if your WS is 4 or less or you fail fear. He is T5 with W5 so he can take a beating. His saves are not that great but he easily regains wounds by casting the Great Maw magic. He is also a bit of a combat beast, no Tyrant, but he'll do in the place of one.
Bruiser BSB
Stubborn Crown, Enchanted Shield, HA, GW
Pretty standard. With easy access to a stubborn spell I may switch out the crown, but knowing is there when you need it...
Firebelly, Level 2, AHW
Hellheart (D6x5 inched worth of miscast causing madness once a game)
This guy brings some good action that helps round out a list. Random fire spells are nice, especially Flaming Sword (auto wounding Ironguts anyone). Flaming impact hits help get rid of regen nice a quick and a breath weapon at Str4 can help turn any combat when I need that extra punch.
Core
Ogres x 9 w/ Ironfist, Full Command
Decent medium unit good at holding stuff up and getting in the way.
Ironguts x 6 HA, GW, Full Command, Standard of +1 Leadership
These guys take all the characters, the Firebelly and Slaughtermaster make way to the front denying the chance to attack the unit. It hits hards, just like ogres should
Special
Ogres got some real magic in special in the new book. Lets start shall we?
Leadbelchers x 6 LA, Muso
These guys are now kinda like flamers, D6 Str4 Armor Piercing shots each a turn, with no move and shot or multiple shot penalty. At BS3 they are hitting on 4's in close range, 5's at long range, but with a new range of 24" they can get to shooting in turn 1 with a 30" threat range. Only downside is they are slow to fire so no stand and shoot, but to be honest stand and shoot would be broken with these guys once you got them in a building.
Mournfang Cavalry x 4 HA, IF, Full Command, Dragonhide banner
A real face wreaking unit. Picture if you will (here comes a run on sentence I'm sure) a 2+ armor save, 8" moving, swiftstriding, D3 impacting, 3 Str 4 and 4 Str 5 attacking, stomping unit re-rolling all 1's to hit, to wound and to save on the turn it charges. Oh, and it also has a strength 3 breath weapon causing always strike last. Okay, that makes them sound really good and broken, well they are really good, but they have weaknesses. I can't give all my secrets away here can I?
Sabretusks 1 x 3
Three single packs of Sabretusks, 21 points each, with WS4, Str 4, T4, W2 and 3 attacks. Sound cheap right? Well at leadership 4 and a special rule that does not let them use the general or BSB they are easy to scare away. But 63 points to burn through 3 deployments really lets me get the match ups I want on the table. Good distractors, re-directors, and they get rid of fanatics right Mike?
Rare
Ironblaster
Its a cannon, its a chariot, its a Super~Cannon~Chariot thing. Able to kill lore master goblins of an aracknarok in a single shot. This thing is money in the bank. When it works it works supper well. A move and shoot cannon that can do impact hits and hold its own in combat. I guess thats why it only has a 36" range and costs twice as much as most other cannons. Still, Ogres having nothing else that does what this does so you have to take it.
Stonehorn
This thing is money, but in a centerpiece way. It is such a forking' kick arse model. I'm not super sold on it, seems like a solid average choice, but I think over time will be seen as the better choice over the thundertusk.
I'd love to have room for Maneaters in here but there just isn't. Either a bigger list or taking something out is the only way. Thats really been the tune of these 8th ed books. You just can't fit everything you want, that sounds like the way it should be to me =D
Thoughts on the list? On the ogres in general? On life the universe and everything?
