I have the LaSalle rules, I will bring them with me next time I'm at Hobbytown. I also have Johnny Reb III and Regimental Fire & Fury, I'll grab all 3 so you can give them a look. I haven't had much time to read LaSalle just yet but as soon as I get a couple new web servers set up for work I'll dive into it.

I've read some negative things on the FoG system, as being a bit too complicated. One comment said something along the lines of it being a geometry text book wrapped in a wargame rulebook cover. The thing with BP, as you say, is that it's made for large tables...too big to even fit in our room. Reading some stuff about it on TMP doesn't give me a warm fuzzy...one of the mechanics that really turned me off was the random number of moves per turn that units get. Some "Friction" is fine, but having a unit move between 0 and 3x based on a dice roll every turn just didn't sit right with me. The points thing isn't that big a deal, if nothing else we can borrow that from another system. So far every review I've read for General de Brigade/Guns at Gettysburg has been very positive, as a nice "in-between" the 'lighter' systems like BP and RFF and the heavier systems like FoG and JRIII (which sounds really daunting to me). So for me, BP isn't that appealing based on what I've read, but I'd love a chance to look over the rules myself. Larger battles with a simpler system doesn't sound horrible, but we don't have that much space, terrain, nor minis You've brought up the 'points' thing a couple times, Shane. What's your thoughts on how to do games? Doing just 'historical' battles doesn't appeal too much to me, as while it will be fun and good photo-ops, will look great and we'll have fun, they are more often than not unbalanced and one side will have a huge advantage. I'd like to have them occassionaly definitely (I'm hoping to do Peach Orchard/Wheatfield from Gettysburg...Antietam Cornfield...some Second Manassas first days; but I also want to have some reasonably balanced 'fictional' battles too! Ben, I'd love to be able to look over all 3 of those. I'll have my Guns at Gettysburg and General de Brigade available for folks to borrow on Saturday, too! Shane, when do you want to try to get a demo of Guns at Gettysburg in?

I really need a chance to sink my teeth into this in terms of game mechanics and see stuff on a table. It's all greek to me at this point. With the show going on, I'm lucky I can get actual work done. Also, my wife and I are adopting a dog, so I'm a bit distracted.
I will probably get into either ACW or Napelonic or both, but am not ready to jump in with both feet just yet. I would lean towards Napoleon, just cause I like to see a time when the French won things....

The poor French...ya know I really don't understand this American paradigm of them being a poor military power. I mean, they got plowed over in WW2, sure...but so did every damn other country in Europe (Brits included...an argument for another time), but prior to that...what? I mean go back to Charlamagne and they kicked they crap out of everyone they fought! How many hundreds of years of European political diplomacy has revolved around maintaining a balance of power so the French (or Spanish) didn't take over the rest of the Continent? That said, I agree...French is the way to go, and I'm glad someone else is wanting to be on my side for a change!

Hey Bob, sorry I won't be able to make it this week - I have some friends coming for a tour of NYC. I'll try and make it next weekend.

Sounds great! I just found Shane's post about Gordon and Hague. This stuff looks really fun, if 10mm were our thing this would be the way to go, I think! The rules look well-written, though I don't have a good feel for how they really work from a browse. Does it seem to anyone else that 15mm is the most common? I don't see a lot of 10mm ACW stuff besides these guys. Still, definitely worth a look to browse the *free* rules: www.gordonandhague.com/Good stuff, Shane...you need to speak up and feed me info more!

If the club decides to build any more terrain tables, I'd certainly look at the tutorial on Gordon and Hagues' site. It looks pretty simple, cheap and effective.

Ooh does Sean Bean die? Sean Bean dies in stuff like nobody's business. Watched the first part of that - it's pretty good. Late 90's? Might have to pick up the DVD (when I have more money to spend on a new miniature game, since I know that's what will happen if I watch the whole thing )

Sean Bean NEVER dies in these shows, Sharpe is like the James Bond of the Napoleonic era in them! Here's a full list of all the episodes, although they're more like movies. When I was growing up in London, al my friends watched them, it was really popular. Here's a full list of all the episodes. The stories do progress so watch out for spoilers! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpe_(TV_series)The first episode pretty much establishes the characters, but the second episode is where it really kicks in! "Over the hills and far away..."

Jason, after seeing this you'll get the line in Fellowship of the Ring, when Boromir finds the shards of Narsil, cuts himself, and says...
"Still Sharpe."

FOW-style Napoleonic Rules: www.manatwar.es/A 'simplified' Nappy system, I read it often compared to FOW being a simplifed WW2 system. Minis are packaged similar to FOW too...want a French Line Infantry Brigade? It's all in one box. Want a British Light Cavalry Brigade? It's all in one box. It looks like their model-line is very limited, however.

First ones look like pretty good deals, your second link is in British Pounds, so not quite as good.
