heh - no seriously though I do have a lot to update since last time. I've been so busy working on everything I haven't taken the time to post anything, and this post is going to mostly be 'look at all the pictures' so I can get back to working. I don't know how the hell I'm going to get done, yet at the same time I'm more confident that I'll be done than I've been before for previous tournaments, so we will see. I'm happy to say the sculpting work on the miniatures is done, save for touching up the Rotons, so I'm in better shape than I was for, say, the Ghosts and Goblins when I was trying to have them ready for the Ordo-Ineptus Bloody Valentine WHFB tournament in February of '10 (they weren't) or the Eyes of the Medusa army I wanted to have up and running for a Brothers Grimm tournament the following September (it wasn't)
I am hitting a wall in the painting where I'm just burnt out, so now I'm shifting my focus to the display base for a couple days in the hopes that when that starts taking shape and looking cool, it will get me excited enough to jump back into the painting.
In the meantime though, below you can see what I did finish since last time, and looking at them all now, I do feel a little better because I can see that I did do quite a bit in the past couple of weeks.
Here's one of the finished sculpts (for King Hsss)
And here's the man himself, who I'll probably paint tomorrow to distract myself from the awfulness of the Buccaneers.
Last weekend I finished the plans for Snake Mountain, and photocopied them and glued them to a sheet of foamboard, then cut them out and assembled them to make a miniature version just so I could get an idea of what it would look like and if there were any big flaws that needed to be corrected before moving on to full-scale.
(sorry that one is a little blurry - I'll get a better pic next time)
And then this week I've been drawing a grid on my foam project boards from Home Depot and then transferring my plan from the graph paper to the grid.
And then finally today I cut out all of the pieces and did a basic assemble with no glue or anything to see how I was looking and if there was proper room for the various models and elements. (you don't see the other six vehicles there, because they are going to be suspended in mid air by hidden struts that will attach to the sides of the mountain, and I think two of them will just be hovering near 'ground level' toward the front of the display)
And it's looking pretty good so far. The next step is to do a little sculpting and shaping and tweak a couple of things, then start fixing them together. It is basically going to come apart in three pieces so it can travel with me in my suitcase. How I plan to do it is to drill holes in each level for a series of 1/2" PVC pipes and have 3/4" connectors where the sections meet. I have a liquid nails type glue that will bond foam and PVC to use to fix the pipes in, and I'll just use wood glue in between the boards with kabob sticks fixing them together and in place. Some of the finer sculpting details will be handled with wood putty. I'm hoping to be at the painting phase by next weekend.
