The Evil of Dr. Shellendrak
Within the Forsaken Vale south of Bretonnia, and surrounded by dense primeval forest lies the small community of Shadygrove. While the township's relatively secluded location has protected it from the many bloody squabbles of the border princes over the years, they have ever been subjected to the depradations of the residents of Shellendrak, a sprawling estate nearby, and home to an ancient family of the same name. For generations those who live in that rambling manse have always dabbled in dark and forbidden arts and brought terror upon the local community, but the current resident in particular has shown great attention to the residents of the community, often using them as cattle in his foul experiments and terrorizing the town with the results of these dark forays into the realms which mortals were not meant to enter. The townsfolk refer to him as 'the Ghoul of the Grove' and speak of him only in hushed whispers.
As an alchemist and necromancer, Dr. Shellendrak is constantly pursuing dark sorcerous arts and unholy sciences. In addition, he has made dark pact with evil creatures from the worlds beyond, as had Shellendraks before him. His ancestral home and its grounds are infested with creatures only imagined in the darkest of nightmares, and it is even said that the doctor himself is no-longer quite human.
The dark power of Shellendrak had been steadily growing, beginning to threaten the lands around Shadygrove. The evil deeds of its master reached communities in Brettonia and the Empire, as well as the land of the dwarves, and even as far as the chaos reaches in the north. From around the Old World, bands of powerful heroes were dispatched and made the long journey to Shadygrove. Their aims and motivations varied but one thing they shared were the terrors they faced at the home of Dr. Shellendrak. The invaders fought hard, and penetrated deep into the heart of the manse, but were ultimately turned back – having been weakened by the doctor’s foul guardians and by warring amongst themselves.
Incensed at the attempt to destroy him and the damage done to his home as well as the loss of some of his creations, Dr. Shellendrak now intends to vent his wrath upon the defenseless folk of Shadygrove.
As those of you who attended the last Shellendrak game know, it is a huge and chaotic skirmish battle, with several players pitting their warbands against the monsters and horrors of Dr. Shellendrak. By popular request, I had been planning on giving Shellendrak an encore, and have decided to tie it directly into the summer map campaign. For one thing, I have placed Shellendrak and the village of Shadygrove into the Forsaken Vale as a single territory. The player who wins the Shellendrak game will start the campaign with the Shadygrove region as a bonus territory. For another, the selection of HQ territories will go by the rankings from the Shellendrak game, with the winner getting first choice and so on.
The rules used in the game are the basic core mechanics of Warhammer, with a lot of rules from the Mordheim skirmish game thrown in. For those who played the last game, you still may have a copy of them, and for the most part, they will be unchanged this time around.
A Double Feature
This time, Shellendrak will be broken up into two games and two separate scenarios; Shellendrak’s Revenge and Return to Shellendrak.
The first is sort of a preliminary scenario that will be played on a much smaller scale with a much shorter length, in which players will be able to gain clues that will help them in the main scenario, and may also even gain additional support for the main scenario depending on how they do. How players do in the first scenario will also determine the order in which they get to choose deployment zones.
When and Where?
Since it has decided that the first session of the summer campaign will be taking place on Saturday, the 13th of June, the Shellendrak scenarios will have to take place before that. I have created a poll here with several possible dates for both scenarios, so all players wishing to participate should vote for whichever date(s) would work best for them, and if they have a definite conflict on a particular date(s), they should post it to this thread so that it can be taken into account when choosing a date.
Since the first scenario is on a much smaller scale, it can easily be accommodated in one of our Hobbytown nights, particularly one of our Friday sessions. The main event, however, is large and tends to be an all day thing, so we would have to find a separate venue for that and do it on Saturday or Sunday.
SCENARIO 1
Shellendrak’s Revenge
As much of his horrid menagerie has been destroyed or slain, Shellendrak has called for his old friend, Dr. Carnivean and his Circus Chimera to help him take his vengeance upon the people of Shadygrove. Carnivean is a twisted and evil sorcerer and flesh warper, and his odious carnival is full of hideous monstrosities, chimeric beasts, and twisted wretches. More than a few of these pitiable and malevolent creatures had been one of Dr. Shellendrak’s experiments.
And now this diabolical circus has come to the small community of Shadygrove, just as once again, warbands have gathered for the purpose of assaulting Dr. Shellendrak’s lair and destroying the monster for good. For the righteous of these, there is a moral imperative to intervene on behalf of the beleaguered townsfolk, while for the less noble, the attempted destruction of Shadygrove provides an opportunity to gain more insight for the coming battle, by interrogation of the locals if necessary.
This first scenario will take place in the village of Shadygrove, and the table will be set up with terrain as you would expect. Defeating members of the Circus Chimera will give points toward victory. There will also be villagers throughout the village that can be rescued/captured to earn points towards victory and each will also provide a random clue that may be useful in the next scenario.
Warband Creation
For Shellendrak’s Revenge, each player will have 200 points to create a warband using the following guidelines.
-Warbands must be of the army being used in the map campaign
-Warbands must have a minimum of 3 models and a maximum of 7 models
-Models must be chosen from Hero and Core troop types
-At least one model must be a Hero character
-No special characters are allowed
-Characters and other models may be mounted
- No Flyers may be used
- No large monsters (anything classified as a large target) may be used
-Chariots may be used, but other war machines may not
- Models may be given any equipment, items, etc, that they may normally be given
-Characters may be casters, though spells will be toned down heavily to reflect the smaller scale of a skirmish game
-Models can be unit champions
This time I’m covering my bases and noting that there may be modifications to these guidelines in the few weeks if I see a need, but basically this is it.
Players should confirm their participation/warband type by posting to this thread. I will provide an e-mail address to which warband lists can be submitted. (Eric, do you think you could set up an ordo-ineptus e-mail address for me to be used for the summer campaign? doctorcarnivean@ordo-ineptus or forsakenvale@ordo-ineptus or something like that?)
SCENARIO 2
Return to Shellendrak
Dr. Carnivean and his Circus Chimera having been dealt with, and the village of Shadygrove safe for the moment, the fight is now taken to Dr. Shellendrak’s doorstep as the warbands once again prepare to delve into his den of evil and confront what horrors await them within. Will any of them survive?
The main Shellendrak scenario will be very similar to the previous Shellendrak game in setup, though many of the areas that were explored last time will have new occupants and new dangers.
I haven’t worked out the specifics of warband generation, but I do know that the warband used in Scenario 1 (those that survived anyway) will form the core of it, and that how players do in the first game will influence the warband size in some way. I will post more details with the complete game rules in a later thread.
