Roumor has it that the French army that invaded Mexico back had an important disadvantage, although hidden to most, as it was very subtle and has been tried to keep hidden to the public eye. The French Army were known to be dependent on DHMO. (Read Bob's note on this scary chemical).
The Mexican army confronting them also depended on it, as did their horses, without which their endurance and valour in combat would have been deminished. Consider also that Puebla is in a very dry, hot area of Mexico and the only way to endure this contition would be to rely on their dependancy on this chemical. The Mexican army had reserves of it, very well kept, and treasured, while the French ran out of it, most likely.
