Gral Bridge joins the fray
What can I say, I’m weak and can’t resist cool minis and games, so I’m starting one more army yet, Dr. C watch out!!, I’m getting close ;D
I got figures for a Union Brigade, so the next step is to find a Unit that fought across the war and that is colorful enough to get me motivated to paint and play (as if I need more), so I hit the “reliable” Wikipedia; my original idea was to go with the Glory theme (I love that movie), but getting the models that look like the men of the 54th Mass would be very tricky and since I got the models as payment for a commission magnets job (thanks Bob, you’re awesome) I wanted to find something cool to do with them without any major conversion; the second thought was to go with something from the Sherman’s March (Savannah Campaign), but Sherman’s Army was huge divided into many Corps, so it would be difficult to pick an specific Brigade from the many he commanded, so it was time to use Google and look for famous Brigades or Regiments and came across with a project from a school history teacher (might be CaptianEcho’s) were he mentioned a few famous Units from both sides and one of them was the Irish Brigade, so I look for it on Wikipedia and as soon as I saw their flag I knew this was the one.
The Irish Brigade was part of the Potomac Army and composed mainly by (yes you guessed) Irish immigrants, it originally consisted of three regiments the 63rd, “the Fighting” 69th (already my favorite) and the 88th New York and took part in a lot of battles including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg; was also known in part for its famous war cry, the "faugh a ballagh", which is an anglicization of the Irish phrase, fág an bealach, meaning "clear the way"
