I say keep it battlebox only... going back to whoever said we can break 11 points...
Goreshade the Bastard -6 Reaper +7 Bane thralls (5 grunts 1 leader) +5 BLT +4 Necrotech +1
11 points....and is incapable of losing to a battle box...
So if we are advertising as a battlebox type tournament for noobies lets keep it that way haha. I couldn't imagine playing the Khador battle box with this list

Goreshade is usually not allowed in mangled metal tournaments. At least all the one's i have been too.

Goreshade sure is a bastard but we would be going for Mangled Metal/Tooth and Claw so that list wouldn't be legal. If someone wants to play a Mangled Metal list with Goreshade, I don't see it being terrible, to be honest. Mage Blight is powerful but costs 5 focus to cast and, at small point levels, there aren't going to be many spells cast. Sure, you just stopped your opponent from using their feat, but you only have 2 focus left. Let's not forget that these tables will be smaller too, and without any significant speed buffs for warjacks (let alone Banes), Goreshade could actually find himself not as well-matched as you'd think. Terrain and clever positioning can totally compensate for a bad match-up. Players with arc nodes (Cygnar, Cryx) will have no problem circumventing a lot of pGoreshade's tricks and Hordes factions will typically fair better against Banes when they're only MAT 6. If you ignore Mage Blight and his feat and look at what pGoreshade offers, there's very little you need to worry about.
My argument is that anyone who wants to try to bring a broken list is more than welcome to do so, but they won't make any friends in the club for doing so. I tend to find that the more restrictions you place on tournaments, the more people try to circumvent them. Let's trust that players will bring whatever they can to combat something like a pGoreshade list instead of shutting people down for wanting to try something because we think it's "broken."
What if the event looked like the following: 10 points (or Battlegroup box) 2 Lists (optional) Divide and Conquer Mangled Metal/Tooth and Claw (warjacks/warbeasts only) No character models (except for warcasters/warlocks)
Prizes (equal value): 1) Best winning record according to SR2012 rules 2) Painting raffle for fully painted + based lists (if bringing 2 lists, both must be painted and based) 3) Gentleman's Award (each player votes for the recipient of this prize and cannot vote for themselves)
This way, players have the option of bringing a second list if they wish, but must play each list the same number of times to compensate for extra opportunities. Additionally, custom lists will only be 10 points instead of 11, to help make battlegroup boxes more viable versus custom lists which could pack specific synergies. In other words: veteran players will be allowed to play with an expanded collection of models, but players with battlegroup boxes (or newer players) will see a more fair/balanced playing field.
The Gentleman's Award sounds like a sportsmanship award, but really I like it because it can be for whatever reason you like. Perhaps you didn't play against the person but they were just really nice to you. Or maybe you really love their paint scheme or were impressed with how well they beat you. It's open to interpretation and so it's less about sportsmanship and more about being an all around great person.
Thoughts?

I really like the custom list point handicap, I think that's excellent. I personally wouldn't do a two list format... kind of boggles my mind at such a small point/player format. I dunno, seems unnecessary. People who only own the battlebox will just be running one list -- no need for veteran players to get another advantage over them by having two lists to draw from.
Gentlemen's award sounds really cool as well.

So if I fielded my battle box but instead replaced sorcha with vlad, would I be pushed down to 10 points, or is that only for 2 lists?

I'm glad you guys like the point handicap idea! I was a little wary of how people might take it at first but the more I think about it, the more fair I think it is. I've seen another store attempting something like this but they have complex rules about what warjacks/warbeasts you can take and I'd like to keep it as simple as possible.
I wasn't terribly attached to the 2-lists optional idea, but I figured it might help people who worry about bad match-ups at such a small level. On second thought, though, I think it'd be fine with one list. This is really more about having fun and getting people to start playing than trying to be truly competitive. I might even call this a Gentleman's tournament, since those seem to be my claim to fame.
I've also added the battlebox equivalents from Privateer Press for their Journeyman Leagues so that Mercenary and Minion players have some options and can join in on the fun!
So here's what it's looking like: 1 List 10 points OR battlebox OR equivalent (list at bottom) No Theme Lists Games played on 2'x2' boards with 5" and 7" radial deployment zones 30 minute rounds + variable (tbd each round) - 5 minute turns with 2 minute extension
Battlebox equivalents (taken from Privateer Press Journeyman League): Menoth - pKreoss, Vanquisher, Crusader, Repenter (2 player starter box) Retribution - Kaelyssa, Manticore, Griffon, Chimera Mercenaries - pMangus, Mangler, Renegade, Talon Mercenaries - Gorten Grundback, Driller, Grundback Gunners x3 Mercenaries - Bartolo Montador, Mariner, Freebooter, Buccaneer Minions - Lord Carver, War Hog, Gun Boars x2 Minions - Bloody Barnabus, Wrastler, Ironback Spitter
