So I was reading the LostHemisphere blog and they recently had an interesting tournament format that I was thinking could work very well at the club. Since there are fewer players at the club with particularly large armies, instead of trying to have a "standard" size tournament, why not just have fun little battlebox tournament instead? Here's what I'm thinking:
One list only 11 Points OR Faction Battlegroup box (at least one is 12 points) Games played on a 2'x2' section of board with modified deployment zones (more 'tables' this way and less space to run away) No character warjacks/warbeasts
I think this could be fun because it means that anyone could just pick up one of the battlegroup boxes at the store (or order one) and we could have a tournament really easily. With the new plastic Hordes battlegroup boxes released this past spring/summer it'll be even easier for everyone to jump on-board and get playing.
I've also loved having a "painting raffle" prize for those who have a fully-painted force, as it encourages EVERYONE to paint because we all have an equal chance of winning instead of one person always winning prize money because his/her army looks amazing. It also will be really easy for everyone to paint a battlegroup so we could potentially have a fully-painted tournament.
Also, I wouldn't mind running the tournament myself if people wanted to borrow any of the battlegroups that I own (although they would be disqualified for the fully-painted raffle, of course).
Thoughts?

This sounds really cool. I'd totally be interested... I wonder how well balanced all of the battle boxes are (I always thought some were innately better than others?). The painting raffle idea is awesome, I'm definitely a fan of that. And with such a small point level it's realistic for people to get their stuff painted.

I would be interested, hopefully I could get my caster by then, and my army painted. Hopefully it will encourage people tobuy a battlebkx and learn to play.

I would be interested. Especially if it's not just battle box only or jack/ beast only. I have something in mind to use with Feora2.

Yeah, that's another question I had -- would list restrictions limit things to Battle Box-esque? I get switching to different casters and stuff like that, but if it's simply whatever 11 points you can come up with I can imagine some pretty broken combo's at that small of a points limit. This is just the kind of incentive I need to paint up my Khador stuff though, which is awesome

Two 11 pt lists. Feora2, Crusader, Templar, Full choir Harbinger, Crusader, Vilmon, 2 Paladins, and either Nicia or a Senascal
Ithink the first is pretty fair. I wouldn't want to face the second.
Maybe no characters beyond the caster?

pButcher, min Winterguard with UA, Joe, Kodiak. Even without character restrictions, swap the Winterguard for Kayazy. *shrug*
Personally, if we're doing battle boxes I think keeping Mangled Metal type format ('jacks/beasts only) with no characters solves most of the problems. Removes most of (though not necessarily all) of the crazy broken combos.

I don't even remember what my battlebox has, I think it's pMorghoul, a Gladiator, and two Cyclops Savages. Winterguard laugh at that

So glad to see so many people excited about it! I should have clarified - the 11 point lists would be for "Mangled Metal/Tooth and Claw" lists in the spirit of the battleboxes - i.e. warjacks/warbeasts only, without any solos, units, or characters. I do know that Privateer Press has openly stated in the past that the battlegroup boxes are balanced against each other (although they've said Hordes boxes are only balanced against other Hordes boxes, etc.) but giving 11 point lists balances this out a little bit - in other words, if you play Circle, you could bring a Gorax instead of an Argus. I don't think that seeing Beast 09 or Deathjack would be fun for many people and the purpose of this is to encourage new players to join in while still having fun.
The idea is to start small, have fun, and get people just playing games and having fun! I think having prizes other than 1st place is key here since the spirit of this event is to get people having fun, not seeing who can wreck the most face.
I'm thinking that prize support should be equally split between three prizes: 1) First place - according to SR rules 2) Painting Raffle - everyone with a painted army gets an entry 3) Gentleman's Prize - voted for by the players (I've done this in the past and it works rather well)
Is there a time when people would like to see this even run? Would the first weekend in November be available/appropriate? That would give time for people to pick up/paint a battlebox or equivalent.

I know I'd be away at college (kinda skews my availability), but I would recommend opening up a new thread with a poll to get people voting and drum up some more interest. 40k Doubles Tournament is in November, Fantasy Tournament is December... October would be cool, but it's more last minute. Or, shoot for January... get people to ask for a battlebox for Christmas so they can play with it the following month
