Schoolwork has been keeping me real busy the past week since the tournament, but I've got some time this morning and figured I'd post up a recap of how my Warriors of Chaos did at the WFB tournament held at the Colisseum of Comics in Kissimee, FL (about 50 minutes from me)
SPOILER ALERT
It wasn't pretty
Game 1: Tomb Kings
Don't look at it Marion!
I looked at the Ark.
My entire army looked at the Ark.
First magic phase of the game, I failed to dispel the light of death, and it jumped through 8 of the 10 units I had on the field, wiping out the hellcannon crew, killing a spawn, nearly killing the warshrine, killing most of the dogs, and putting a dent in the warriors.
Guess I should have thrown three dice at that one..
I do like the change in that spell from the old casket rules. That "everything that can see it is affected" just jumped right out at people and scares the hell out of them so that everyone would always save their dispel dice for the end of the phase to make sure the casket effect didn't go off. Now it kind of flies under the radar a little bit, with a effects one unit and rolls to keep going mechanic. I think it's a 4+ to keep going, so if the oppenent lets it through, there's a decent chance it can end up doing some damage
The rest of the game pretty much continued to go downhill for me. It was my first game of WFB since Oct of 2010 and I think I probably made the most misteps in that first game for being so rusty. I don't think I deployed well, and while I threw a spawn in the path of the chariot unit with the flaming banner, I put the dogs in the way of my warrior unit so that they couldn't charge on my turn and ended up getting charged by the chariots and taking casualties from the impact hits.
They finished off the chariots in combat, and I think that's the only enemy unit I destroyed that game. The shooting took down the trolls turn 2. The hellcannon now with Ld 4 charged the tomb guard unit, and even with the spawn jumping in to back it up, the two unbreakable units were only able to last a couple combat rounds. (the prince had a great weapon and was able to do some good damage to the hellcannon with it.
At the end of the game, it was just the two characters and a few members of their unit left and I charged them straight into the tomb guard go go out in a blaze of glory. Darth Infectis was the last one standing and he managed to take a few down with him.
These pictures aren't great because I forgot to bring the right batteries for the camera. I stopped taking pictures after the first game because I wasn't getting good shots of anything with my phone.
Game 2: Dark Elves
This was a mostly combat and magic DE list, with only a unit of crossbow shootyness.
I ended up losing most of my army including the two characters top of turn two and everything else was pretty much a mopping up action after that.
The theme of the game was something good happens, immediately negated by something really bad.
My first magic phase I rolled an 11 and channeled for a total of 12 power dice. YAY! To try and draw out some dispel dice I cast magnificent buboes on the hydra (because I wasn't in range to any characters) with two dice and miscast, rolling a "6" to pretty much empty the rest of my dice pool (he still had all his dispel dice so my four remaining dice didn't go very far) so basically wasted the best magic roll for me in the whole tournament and an irrisistable cast to do one wound to a hydra (which it regenerated, to add the crowning touch )
Next turn, I got to put Terror on my warrior unit with the warshrine and then charged his corsair unit that had just failled a charge (or killed a dog unit, I can't remember now). The elves failed their Ld twice in a row (BSB was in that unit) and got their weapon skill reduced to 1, further reduced to 0 by the mark of nurgle so that all of my guys auto-hit. SWEET!
Of course, I completely forgot he had cast a spell on that unit last turn that gave the entire unit STR equal to their LD - Strength 8 in other words.
So I killed 12 elves, and they wiped out the entire unit and both characters. OUCH!!
Game 3: Dwarves
I thought this one was going to go badly as well when Darth Infectis took a cannonball to the face top of turn one and failed his "look out sir" and his 4+ ward save, bu this one was actually my best showing, and I scraped by with what was technically a draw since I only won by about 190 points, but I got all of the bonus points for the scenario and my opponent got none, so was probably more like a minor win for me. This one was the "hold the pass" scenario where you played lengthwise on the table. All of my chaff units allowed me to really outdeploy him so that a big unit of thunderers and an organ gun were never really involved in the battle.
Did better with magic than in any of my previous games. Fetid Quagmire did some very nice things for me and awful things to the slow, heavy armored dwarves, and I was able to hit a bunch of his units with Rot, Glorious Rot late in the game when I finally hit his shooting line and wreaked havoc on a bunch of his stuff. The marauders performed well and managed to put away the one combat unit with the BSB that had been weakend with the quagmire spell. The trolls and warrior units took care of the engineer character and a few of the war machines.
In the end, I still had Festerskull (lev 4 caster/general), most of the marauder unit, one of the spawn, the warshrine, all the trolls, and the hellcannon, and he had a big unit of thundererers, and organ gun, and half of a smaller unit of thunderers.
My total points for the day was 12, which was less than the points I gave up in each of my first two games (YIKES)
But I won Player's Choice for favorite army and opponent, which was awesome, and I had a great time playing against three fun opponents.
And I used my gift certificate to buy a talking dalek to annoy my friends at school with
So all in all it was a great day and I'm looking forward to playing another tournament there soon! It's a great store with lots of cool stuff to look at and drool over in between games, and they put on a good event
