<EDIT> I changed armies but decided to keep the same thread, so just scroll down to my 4/1 post to see the Ghosts N' Goblins When I was at the store yesterday I saw that the next tourny coming up that's applicable to me is a 2100 pt WFB one on Saturday April 13th. Right now only three of my ten WFB armies I have the current book for; Skaven, Beastmen, and Dark Elves (and I'm not even sure about the dark elves since I haven't been paying attention in a couple years) The skaven are in the middle of a major overhaul from my old 6th ed army and still need a ton of work but I've been working on them 40 minutes a day on my lunch breaks so I'm hoping they'll be done early summer. Dark Elves I remember even when looking at them after 8th came out that I now need more points in core since they went back to the percentage system. Which leaves us with beastmen, which is good actually since they're not much more that needed to be done to them but I'd just been lacking the motivation, so this will make me finish them and have them out of the way and ready to field. "It Came From the Woods" 337 - Doombull w heavy armor, gold sigil sword, enchanted shield, talisman of preservation, gnarled hide 110 - Bray Shaman w level 2 upgrade 116 - Wargor BSB with heavy armor & shield 298 - Gor Herd x 39 w full command 300 - Gor Herd x 40 w foe render & standard 498 - Bestigor Herd x39 w full command 55 - Razorgor 55 - Razorgor 55 - Razorgor 275 - Jabberslythe 2100 pts So what I have to do is: - finish painting up my jabberslythe conversion (I think I'm going add some new sculpting details first (warts and stuff, foam coming out of the mouths, etc) so I can give him a better paint job.
- finish the trees and stuff to make the theme bases for the second gor herd then do maybe a quick wash and highlight on the gor herd I used last edtion and put them on the new theme bases
- Add some cool conversion stuff to three centigors, put them on thematic monster bases and paint them up to be my razorgors (my solution to the problem of "I really like the centigor models but the stats suck and I really like the razorgor stats but the models suck")
- Paint up two or three more bestigor models (I think I remember using a smaller unit when I used them as marauders for the tourny in September and leaving a few unpainted)
Nothing that I think I can't do in time for the tournament, but I've terriby misjudged hobby projects before

Second thought on this list is shaving 10 guys off each gor herd and dropping musicians and then giving them all the extra hand weapon having them fight in six ranks of five, and then adding a warhound chaff unit and a spawn. What I had initially shaved off the 2500 list I planned to get it down to 2100 was all of the chaff units, but I think this list needs to be able to out-deploy to put those three big units in optimal position, so I thought it would be worth reducing the gor units to get two units back in and also get the second hand weapon back on the gors, and so now I'm back up to ten deploys plus characters, which kind of meets the 13 deploys of the 2500 list halfway

Beastmen are fun. I also play as them and I've had a fair amount of experience with them.
The jabberslythe is one of the most overpriced models in the game. For 275pts it's really awful. I'd never take it, certainly not at a tournament. That frees up a lot of pts for better stuff.
Common build for doombulls these days is heavy armor, shield, gnarled hide, ramhorn helm, talisman of preservation and the sword of swift slaying. I used that build yesterday and I was quite happy with it. Against anything I5 or below you reroll misses and for every armor save he pases on that +1 save he gets another attack. Pretty nasty.
For wargor bsbs I really like the beast banner to give a gor unit s4, but with that he really needs gnarled hide which you want on your doombull so that's a hard choice, but either is good.
I love bestigors. Deffinetly keep those guys, and razagors are great as well. I'd try to fit in 5 harpies to go after warmachines and 2 units of 5 warhounds are always handy if you can fit those in.
As for gor herds without the beast banner or magic buff they are a bit subpar. I think you should stick to one horde and replace the second with 50 or so ungors to be a steadfast hold up unit. I guess the gors could do the same thing though so either works, ungors are just a bit cheaper.
I loathe not having a L.4 wizard but can't really fit in him. If you can find the pts a 2nd L.2 would be nice and you NEED a dispel scroll at tournaments. Also musicians are probably the best command model given they get you swift reform and losing a draw because you don't have a musician sucks so I'd always take one.
So to sumarize, dropping the jabberslythe should get you the pts for a 2nd L.2, dispel scroll, some hounds, harpies and possibly the best banner. Any pts left over you could always use on more bestigors becuase you can't go wrong with them. Or you could replace the jabberslythe with a ghorgon which is still expensive but far more cost effective.
Good luck!

Heh, you must be one of the new people that joined after I left or you'd know I never field anything that I don't have painted and I can't not use a model that I've spent a lot of time converting. Kind of neurotic that way.
I appreciate the imput though, and I do like your doombull build so I probably am going to use that. I did struggle for awhile with the question of the jabberslythe originally. Getting to scratch build a model for it was really the only thing that made me want to go back to my beastmen after the new book came out and screwed up my whole 3000 points worth of army, but yet the points value for the jabbersythe was so much higher than it's worth. I toyed with the idea of just having three level 2 casters to pretty much guarantee I get the spell that can summon him in and then cast it every turn and hope to roll the doubles to bring him in, so that way he would still show up in half the game I played. The problem is that's not really worth it either since it requires all the caster to anchor themselves to the crummy beast lore, and having additional casters doesn't really help that much in 8th other than give a wider variety of spells, which, as I mentioned, woud all be coming from beastman lore, so I'd ultimately be spending 330 points and probably not do any more in the magic phase than with a single 110 caster using a different lore. I ended up just ditching all the casters and fielding the jabberslythe from the get go. I figure if I was trying to be competitive my beastmen would still be packed up till they got another codex, so if I might as well field the stuff I want.

Okay well I just realized that my microbiology rotation ends on the 11th and I'll be spending time studying for the micro test and then spending half a day driving down to tampa to take it the day before the tournament so I'm definitely not going to be doing all that work for the beastmen. I do still want to play in the tournament, so I decided to go with the Ghosts N' Goblins, my heavilly converted orcs and gobins army. There really isn't anything in my army that got changed with the new book (maybe a couple points costs here and there) so I'm going to skip the $50 codex for now and just use an army builder printout for this one. Ghosts N' Goblins (orcs & goblins)355 - Goblyn Queen (orc great shaman) w boar chariot, lev 4 upgrade, channeling staff, talisman of preservation, and shrieking blade 120 - Gauntfield the Scarecrow (black orc big boss) w talisman of endurance Knave of Spiders 152 - Knave of Spiders (goblin big boss BSB) w gigantic spider, shield, and armor of destiny 90 - Bigg Deff and Littel Deff (orc shaman) w dispel scroll 135 - Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblin mob x20) w short bows and x3 fanatics 135 - Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblin mob x20) w short bows and x3 fanatics 135 - Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblin mob x20) w short bows and x3 fanatics 135 - Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblin mob x20) w short bows and x3 fanatics 135 - Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblin mob x20) w spear, shield, and x3 fanatics 135 - Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblin mob x20) w spear, shield, and x3 fanatics 298 - Goblyn Queen's Bodyguard (black orcs x19) w full command and war banner 105 - Hungry Hungry Trolls x3 (trolls) 85 - Pumkin Chukka (goblin rock lobba) 85 - Pumkin Chukka (goblin rock lobba) 2100 pts The bsb and black orc big boss go in the black orc unit to give them total 4 ranks of 6 I guess I should say that what I'm looking for from the group here is less imput about the list itself (believe me, I know how awful it is - I've used variations of it several times and have never come close to winning a game) but more of "what's the best way I can use it". General tactics of how I shoud approach the game, try to deploy, etc. to make the most of what I've got, to at least keep it interesting and give people a run for their money before they get steamrolled.

Kind of neurotic that way. Yup joined last year. Interesting policy. Sounds like it helps motivate you to get things done.. You're going to have a very hard time with that list. Lots of fanatics is cool but it just doesn't have the hitting power it needs to win. I think you really NEED soem chariots and/or wolf riders as competative lists take a lot of chaff these days and they are easily going to draw your fanatics out far too early if you have nothing to counter them. With the lobbers concentrate your fire on their biggest unit and if you get foot of gork stomp on that same unit to bring it down so that your black orcs and trolls can deal with it. I would keep those 2 units together so they can support each other. As far as the new army book, I suggest you get it sometime soon as it's a nice army as orcs&goblins always have been. Lots of options. You also need the spell lores which have changed a lot.

Hopefully I'll be able to get back up for a visit sometime in the not too distant future and get to lose a game or two to you and the other newer players Interesting policy. Sounds like it helps motivate you to get things done.. Ha! If only.. More often than not it just causes me to drop out of a tournament just because my stuff isn’t painted yet or because I stayed up all night two nights in a row to finish and then just crash. Which is why I decided to roll out the Ghosts N' Goblins, since I'd already gotten my tournament flop out of the way with them when I couldn't get them ready in time the first time I was going to use them back in 2010, and once I did finish them, they looked really great, and I only had to make a couple thematic bases to fill out the black orc unit and a couple new movement trays. Everything was done last night, and I'm in the unusual position of not having to scramble around this morning trying to finish everything and gather it together. I actually even got to read through the rules last night!! Anyhoo, here are pics of the bases. Evil farmland/pumpkin patches is a recurring theme of the army, so I continued in that vein in fleshing out the black orc unit. I also knew Reapers' gauntfield the scarecrow was going to be the black orc big boss and it works well with him as well. And here is the full unit I do want to at some point add in some small spider rider units to screen for chaffe - I just didn't want to have to worry about getting them ready in time. I have the models and I just have to do a little converting (going to give them Halloween masks to go with the army theme) A 2500 pt list would definitely have them in there.
