I am about to make a 4x4 gaming table at my house, and I need to base it. I am going to glue down a layer of fine grain sand mixed with some thicker gravel I picked up
But, my problem is where can I buy nice fine grain sand? Something that has a nice consistency to it to make a table out of. I don't have a dollar store near me, and I'm not sure if home depot stocks anything less than 50lb bags. Any suggestions guys?

Did you try craft stores or pet stores? Possibly gardening or landscaping places like Agway, but they might only carry in 50 lb bags as well.

Try Heritage Hobbies in Wilton for that type of stuff. I think I've seen bags of sand that you could use. Here's their website: www.heritagehobbies.com/

And yeah but if your basing a table i think the best way to go would be a larger bag. Maybe not 50lbs but something bigger than a couple bucks...And who's Jarhead? ?

you can also try a pool supply store they will have very fine sand for filters (also some toy stores may carry bags for sandboxes) most of these will be in larger bags.
Hobbytown may have some basing stuff for the model train layouts (there are also two model train places in downtown Danbury - one at the train station and the other up by exit 6.)

And who's Jarhead? ? Oh you're a smooth one Dante - way to greet the new members I hadn't thought of toy stores. Yeah Railworks is the place near exit 6 - in the plaza just past the McDonalds. It was my go to place for woodland scenics stuff till Hobbytown moved to Danbury

If it turns out you can't find anything smaller than larger bags, I'm sure a few people in the club would spit something like with you. For those of us who do a lot of terrain projects and basing, that kind of thing is always nice to have around

My recomendation is the same as Dr Carnivean. Try Railworks, off exit 6 in Danbury, right across from Elmer's Diner , on Padanaram rd.

lol what's with this Jarhead thing?
anyway thanks for the tips. I ended up stopping in a pet store (because there used to be a dollar store next to it and they closed down while I was at school) and picked up 2 bags of fishtank sand/gravel. I mixed it with some larger gravel I picked up from Hobbytown. It worked pretty well I just finished putting the final layer of water/glue and some detergent on it. I just wish I got an extra bag of the gravel from hobbytown because 1/4 of the table about is just plain finer sand and the rest has larger peices in it. Which kinda looks cool but the unevenness is ircking me lol.
I just gotta spraypaint it now and then drybrush it. With a black spraypaint coat what do you suggest for a dry brush? Maybe like a grey and then a lighter brush of an off-white? And where can i pick up those cheap paints? I can't seem to find a good place near me. This coming friday I'll be down for gaming maybe I can stop by that Micheal's and get some paint...I don't have a Micheal's near me

For the dry brushing, if your going with a rubble feel i always liked a good drybrushing of fortress grey then a light dry brushing of skull white, so for bigger tables juts really grey then white
