This game has been calling me for at least the last couple of months, since I saw it on the shelf, yesterday I cashed my tournament prize and got it, I read through the basic rules at the store and as soon as I got back home I did a test game. For my surprise, I could absorb the rules with-in the first few minutes, so I invited Mek to play with me; she took command of the Empire forces leaving me playing with Luke’s X-Wing, and just by turn two she was also in very good understanding of the rules; we had a great and fun game and it took only 20~30 minutes, which is great considering it was the first game ever for us. Overall the game is very simple, but recreates very nicely the Star Wars dogfight scenes that we all love, I think this is the easiest, simplest and more entertaining game I had played in long time. I’m planning on bring the game to the store next time I can, in case anybody wants to try it and I’ll be more than happy to help with the rules, in the meantime I leave you with this demo from the FFG website. www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/media/XWingFlash/xwing_tutorial_fullpage.html

I've read some really encouraging articles about the game -- I was looking into last week, seeing how much it would cost to get Slave I and some TIE Fighters Do you think the rules are light enough to appeal to non-gamer types, Rod? I'd love to give it a shot.

rules are definitely easy to grasp even with low or no previous war-gaming experience, and even thou when there are tournaments for this game too, I feel it more like a lay back game for a Saturday night.
I think Mek’s opinion could be a little less bias, but I think it could easily appeal to non-gamer type people

Awesome. How many ships do you need for an average sized battle? The starterset only comes with one X-Wing and the 1 TIE Fighters... looks pretty affordable if you only need a handful of ships.

The manual talks about 100 points battles for a 3’x3’ area which could be around 3-5 fighters for the Alliance and 5-8 for the Empire, but there lots of fighter options and I don’t know the points values very well yet, there are X-Wings, Y-Wings and A-Wings and on the Dark side, the basic TIE Fighter, TIE Advanced and TIE Interceptor; the medium the ships are the Falcon and the Slave I, which I believe are around the 35~40 points range.
The Core-Set has 1 X-Wing which could be used to represent a Rookie Pilot (21pts), Red Squadron pilot (23pts), Biggs Darklighter (25pts) and Luke Skywalker (28pts) and 2 TIE fighters used for Academy pilot (12pts), Obsidian Sqd pilot (13pts), Black Sqd pilot (14pts), Night Beast character pilot (15pts), Dark Curse character pilot (16pts) and Mauler Mithel character pilot (17pts).
The basic game is setup for 28 points Luke vs Obsidian Sqd pilot and Night Beast pilot and I would say a nice manageable level would be 50~60 points games
I think for this game the core box set is the best place to start just because of the models cost, one single fighter ship is it is $15 and just with the three ships in the set you’re already saving $5 and you get all the tokens, rulers (very important part), dice (8side very important too) and the rule book, all for $40
I’m still thinking my options for expansion ships before I go crazy and try to order the Falcon

Interesting... I definitely want to try it out a few times before plunging in, but I could totally see myself getting Slave I and a bunch of TIE Fighters to fly around. Especially if I can play games with some non-wargamey friends.

Woah, talk about a coincidence! I just played this game for the first time on my lunch break today, and it's a lot of fun. 4-5 ships a side is enough for a good game, and it's one of those easy to learn/hard to master kind of games, similar to Blood Bowl in complexity.
While the ships seem expensive at $15 a pop, you do get a good amount of tokens and accessories with them, as well as access to bigger and better weapons.
Give it a try - a couple of starter boxes is enough for a great game!
