Currently I am running a pair of dreadnoughts in my Dark Angels list, however I'm using the contemptor models as they are awesome looking. It got me thinking about the contemptor dreadnought rules, specifically the Mortis contemptor.
Contemptor Mortis Dread Base Cost 155 pts WS4 BS5 S7 FA13 SA12 RA11 I4 A2 HP3 2xTwin Linked heavy bolters Smoke Launchers 5+ ward against shooting 6+ ward against assault If stationary gains sky fire and interceptor (player turn only)
Upgrades: 10 pts 2xTwin linked auto cannons 25 pts 2xKheres assault cannon (heavy 6 auto cannon)
Dark Angels Dreadnought 120 pts WS4 BS4 S6 FA12 SA12 RA10 I4 A2 HP3 2xTwin linked auto cannons
Upgrade 25 pts to venerable and get WS5 BS5 and opponents can be asked to reroll damage.
When comparing the two it seems like the obvious choice is the contemptor, for 20 pts over a venerable you get the same load out but better armor and a ward save and sky fire. But I really like the idea of two assault cannons to round out my list of all assault cannons, which brings them to 180 points each. Quite a lot for a dreadnought me thinks, but I think it's right in the sweet spot points wise, where a regular dreadnought may be a little overpriced.
So I ask guys, what are your thoughts, worth the points? Too cheesy? Would you be upset to play against it?

FW/IA stuff is not balanced even but GW/40k standards.
I'm curious...what good does Interceptor do if it's only in your player turn?

I dont think it is player turn only... the book might say that but uts from 5th ed. Might need to check the faq.
The mortis contemptor is pretty cool. Model is sick. Definitely best equipped with the assault cannons, heavy 6 instead of 4. So with 2 its 12 shots, nasty.
It is expensive and still has most of the drawbacks of dreadnoughts in 6th. But probably better then man dreadnought options.
I think a bunch of the forgeworld stuff isnt too bad... contemptors probably make that list as they are pretty expensive. And there are several tournaments that do allow for them as well. I think in your very thematic deathwing list they fit the bill perfectly with the assault cannons.

Those Contemptors seem largely comparable to Defilers/Soulgrinders, which are more durable and meaner in assault but don't have as potent firepower. As Sean said, it's highly thematic and fits your "MOAR ASSAULT CANNONS" army pretty well I personally would have no problem playing against the pair of those guys. But of course, as Bob points out most tournaments in this part of the country are pretty unfriendly towards Forge World rules (but at least you can simply proxy them as normal Dreads in those cases). If I remember Tim's hypothesis correctly, the reason the Contemptors get Interceptor only in the player turn is to allow you to choose to shoot at ground targets if you stand still -- if the Contemptor only gained Skyfire, then it would be forced to snap shot at ground targets. Or I guess you could use it to punk that one Necron unit that arrives from reserves in the opponent's turn

Ahh, I understand...so it's not MY player turn I get Interceptor with the thing, it's YOUR player turn. Sexy.

The not moving interceptor rule is a little wonky. It says if it remains stationary in the movement phase. It's not specific in saying owning players movement phase. That said if I am being allowed to use it I would try to force rules I don't think are intended.
Sky fire and interceptor let me shot at my choice of target, where gaining sky fire would only allow me to snapshot and ground targets per the sky fire rules.
But it seems that most of you seem to think at 180 points it costed appropriately would you say, especially if using the sky fire rules as I believe they are intended.
Since there are no dual assault cannon options in the book they can count as dual auto cannons without much confusion as well. 12 S6 rending shots at BS5 are tasty. Moar dakka dakka dakka dakka!!!
