Now I'm a pretty big Horus Heresy fan. Not the forgeworld game but the books, and I have a question to ask those extra nerdly people out there.
What model of power armor was being used by the chapters? To my understanding all the chapters were operating in MkII and MkIII in the crusade but at the height of the heresy the loyal chapters operated in MkIV. Am i right wrong or something? Just curious.

As far as I'm aware, the Imperium kept advancing their technology to make their troops better equipped to their heretic counter parts.

There were no unified armor marks during the Heresy. Mk. IV was the newest version designed and distributed to the Legions, but this occurred right on the very eve of Heresy -- it's widely regarded as the "best" type of Marine armor. Because it happened so late in the game, Mk. IV armor was given mostly to captains and elite veteran units across different Legions, and as the Heresy went on the Loyalists had much greater access to it (in the Mechanicus novel, Sigismund leads the Imperial Fists first company to Mars to secure hundreds of thousands of brand new suits of Mk IV armor). Mk. V armor is known as the "Heresy" variant, because it was designed during the Heresy. It actually isn't made of complete ceramite (the usual material for Marine armor) -- the studs you see on the shoulders, helmets, legs, etc. are all ceramite, while the surrounding armor is made of a weaker substance -- the stronger studs binding the weaker armor together to make it almost as good as usual Marine armor, but much cheaper and easier to produce. Obviously, this was designed during the height of the Heresy. Corvus armor (Mk. VI) is a little bit of a canonical odd-ball, but I believe it was introduced very late in the Heresy, and didn't see widespread use until afterwards.
So, yeah. Mk. II and III were the most prevalent armor marks, with Mk. IV being introduced right before the Heresy and gradually seeing greater use. The Imperium had far superior manufacturing outputs to create new sets of armor, but the heretics had no qualms about scavenging -- it's not that hard to see how they acquired parts from Mk. IV/V/VI armor, even if they weren't creating it themselves. The forces of Chaos tended to have more hodge-podge armor mixed and matched from different suits anyways... in fact, to my knowledge that wasn't unheard of for loyalist chapters either -- using different pieces of armor from different marks that suited them best.

alright cool kinda what i figured. Based on the books at least they all got a bit of everything. Totally not relevent to a summer collection of a horus heresy army >.> haha torn between pre-heresy Emperor's children sons of Horus or Thousand sons. Read about 15 of the novels and still think fulgrim was my favorite, but was still a huge fan of the thousand sons book and the original triligy 1.2.and 3.
HELP haha

Hmmm... Sons of Horus are really badass. Preheresy Emperor's Children are sweet too, I loved Fulgrim and I think they have some of the best looking FW models out at the moment. Thousands Sons are cool, but I wouldn't build an army for them until FW put out some of the cooler looking parts for 'em. I've flirted with the idea of making an Imperial Fists "1st Company" army in Black Templars colors (with more gold), that could maybe double as a standard Marine army (back when I was convinced BT would keep their own codex). Or do preheresy Dark Angels, who have robes and a black and white color scheme anyways

Yeah well it would just read from the vanilla marine book, I think the horus heresy game forgeworld is doing is a little....eh. But cool models, and I agree about the thousand sons, I would have to play grey knights I think to represent all the different temples and cults but in the end I don't know how well it would really work out, kinda a head ache I think.
Which brings it down to pre-heresy emperors children or sons of horus. Funny how my favorite legions are the traitor legions, but honestly that is really just because they do have the most interesting books and plots. It would be boring to read about how the ultra marines blood angels and imperial fists DIDN'T face the challenges of falling or anything like that. It is so much more interesting to know about the internal conflicts between characters like Loken and Abbadon or Saul Tarvitz and Eidolon.
Man this is going to be a hard decision haha.
