So I'm starting the gears in my Nid army once the new book comes out. I want to do a really bright Army. So I though what's super bright? Poison tree frogs of course. So that's the idea. Hive Fleet Rana Venena! This is where you come in, I need help picking the color. I've honestly nearly chosen but I still need the feedback. That said I will likely do multiple colors for various squad markings. Lastly this was a quick airbrush for proof of concept. So vote away

I immediately leaned toward 8 (probably since it's the scheme I did for Hive Fleet Haemonculus), but ended up going with 9 because it's a little brighter of a scheme of the two and thus closer to your poison tree frog concept. Speaking of airbrushing, have you ever done one of your hobbytime videos about airbrushing? I think I'll be getting the one you mentioned and posted the link to for me, and will probably try playing around with it on either my unpainted lizardmen or my tervigon and gaunts (probably the latter in preparation for the new codex)

Easily number 4, imo. If you go with the purple chitin I would do the yellow carapace, as that looks the best to me (but I'm imagining it less like poison frog, going with a more muted/bonelike orangey yellow. At that point it's just an alternate Hive Fleet Leviathan scheme). Speaking of which, alternate Hive Fleet Leviathan or Hive Fleet Kraken could give you bright looking bugs. Even the original space hulk color scheme, blue and purple, could make a cool bright army. I dig the blue and the orange... if you want to keep the tree frog theme, I think that's the most easily identifiable; and I think it would still manage to look good on a bigger critter with more carapace to show off. I know these are just proofs of concept, but none of them knock my socks off -- why the change of heart from your old 'Nid scheme? I mean, if you really wanted the perfect Tyranid army you would do them up with some Rotting Flesh, a nice muted brown sorta like the old Khemri Brown... give a spritz of Earthshade wash, touch 'em up a bit, and then... lend them to Brian to play some games!

I voted for 4, but I like 5 as well. I would suggest really darkening the blue almost to the point of black with one of those backs. If you want to stick with the lighter blue undertone though, I would suggest trying to emulate one of these two frogs: Poison Dart FrogPoison Arrow Frog

Then again, I just showed these to Alayna and without reading your blurb at the top she immediately said "Woah, those look like tropical frogs!" She's more partial to the blue/orange and blue/yellow ones as well. I think either of those could work, with the warmer color on the carapace and then use black spots to add some markings.

Please continue to vote if you haven't, but I also really like the blue and orange. The problem with changing any of these colors is that they are being airbrushed and I cannot easily change the color. There will be washes and highlights to help. I agree, I want a darker, purer blue. I will look to analternative.

Do you have to use specific paints when you airbrush or do you mix your own and then water them down?

I use the minitaire range of paints when I airbrush. It has a really great range of colors, best airbrush investment I made was ready to use paints, mixing is for the birds.

Thanks! I may have to still mix and water down for my nids because it's an existing paint scheme (or I suppose I could tinker with the minitaire paints and make a bottle of the exact color) but I'd definitely love to use airbrush ready paints for all future projects. Do they generally sell the minitaire range at Hobbytown and gaming stores or do you get them online?

I think HobbyTown can get them. They are made by Badger so most place can get them. Amazon sells them too.

Well a paint scheme has been decided and fleshed out. A little trial and error and some sweet accidental discovery brought me to a super fast and very effective final product. It starts with a white base coat. Then all the fleshy bits are sprayed with a Badger Minitaire Ghost Tint called Plasma Fluid. The armour plates get a bright orange coat. Black spots are liberally applied to all the areas of flesh near the armour plates. At this point I've only spent 10 minutes per model. The weapons and claws get a green ink, the over spray from the blue step make a really cool effect with the green ink. The armour gets a feathering treatment for flare as well. Lastly the eyes and teeth are picked out with white and washed. Finish it off with some fabric glue for slimy slime effect.

I think the spots really make it. Looking good so far

Really digging that scheme. The spots definitely give them more of that tree frog feel.

It's HobbyTimmy update time, Trygon edition. I reprimed my yellow and brown Trygon to fit the theme. The following is another step by step, same as the steps in a previous post. I also started the same steps on a Tyrant Guard, but forgot to take a pre-airbrush photo. Lastly I began the feather and face details on the Tyrgon. Looking very scary.
