So with the new Tyranid book about to hit the shelves I've decided to start a Nid army. Of course with a new book coming out no one knows for sure what's good and what's bad, but I was wondering what are the essentials models that I would be safe in grabbing a few of.

Well the playstyle on the current book is monstrous creature spam, using tons of psychic powers, hopefully it will be similar or quite a few people will lose the lists that they bought. I would think that starting with the Hive tyrant as your HQ would be a good idea because they've been in every codex, and have typically always been a strong point of tyranids. Other than that I can't foresee anything else that wouldn't be subject to changing that much

There are no guarantees, butt hat said a few safe bets. You are almost guaranteed to want a tervigon and a hive Tyrant. The swarm starter box that is coming out on launch is actually quite a good deal. For $170 you get 40 hormagants Amanda 40 termigaunts. When you factor the cost of those models at $44 for 20 you've got $176 right there, you also get a carnifex and 10 gargoyles and some ripper swarms. If hormagants turn out to be crap a quick bits order for some termigaunts arms and your all set.
Rumors for the hive crone, the exocrine and the Haruspex all look promising.
Warriors could be hit or miss.
Hive guard and tyrant guard are likely to be good as well, but not much rumor on those guys so they are definitely a wait and see unless you must have the models.
Edit: I'm intentionally not fixing my typo from the first sentence. Butt hat. Lol.

Yeah termigaunts are always a safe bet, as you'll always use them for something. 'Stealers used to be as well until the previous codex. And the hive tyrant, since you'll probably always be fielding him or something his model will pass for. He's a good one to magnetize the arms on. Do they have a release date yet for the codex?

I've actually decided to do the smart thing and just wait till I have the codex to buy any models, which I cannot wait for. Unfortunately since I didn't order it through hobbytown I won't have it until mid next week.
Swarm deal looks great, just wish I hadn't blown half my cash recently on some new models for my greenskins and chaos armies. I'll probably get a 500-1k army fairly quickly, especially if I use some proxies so hopefully we can get some Nid games going in a few weeks.

Ah the 11th! There's a good chance I might be at the CoC doing a Malifaux tournament that day so I should be able to pick up a copy, and maybe one of the new models if there's anything that jumps out at me

I think that termagaunts are going to once again be the best troop choice... I dont see a person owning less then 40-60 of them having a good list. You wont always start with that many... but tervigons spawn them so odds are 40-60 is a good minimum investment.
I think with the reduction of cost of the carnifex that they are an incredible buy at 120pts base... I think most any list could be improved simply with 3 stock for 360... and many a spam build having like 6. Now a good starting point for them may be 2.. just to leave more points for other things so I think that would be the measured approach.
Now I dont have the codex yet.. but been watching the rumors pretty closely.
I think if buying a new tyranid army you could not go too far wrong with:
Tervigon
30-60 termagaunts
2 Carnifexes.
That gets you an hq that you can convert to a troop later if you add another hq model.
A staple of termagaunts that basically any tyranid player will tell you is probably necessary and has been for several editions.
And 2 budget monstrous creatures to start putting the pressure on the enemy.
All of this is probably advice that Im going to follow shortly.. as my tyranid collection contains none of this... why they havent hit the table all of 6th edition.... At least my 6 lictors became cheaper!
Some other models that will likely be good, Hive Tyrants exocrine is looking good in finalized rumors. Mawloc got a lot cheaper too may compete as the budjet option against carnifex broods in more horde centered lists. The flyers are something that only will work in flyer centered lists so are wait and see models to see how the codex shakes out.

Ya I've been checking out some of the rumors as well and given the carnifexes 120pts cost combined with 3 taking up one heavy support slot means I think 2-3 is a no brainier. Of course I don't know much about Tyranids so I can't say that for sure, just seems MCs that cheap should be taken in multiples.
Good to know to go for termagaunts, wasn't sure which type of gaunt to go for.
