I haven't been so much into 40k lately, but with the advent of the new Tyranid codex my old standby army doesn't quite work anymore. I need something fully painted so I can pick it up and play it at events so I have an excuse to socialize and see people.

Obviously, I push the flying circus theme a bit here. I didn't use any of the formations, simply because I'm not sure if I can always count on them being in play. I also like Hive Crones over Harpies! So five flying Monstrous Creatures is enough to allow me to hopefully not get tabled, and be a pain in the butt to annoying backfield crap. The Flyrants dish out lots of shots, the Crones can hurt almost anything with Vector strikes (d3+1 S8 AP3 hits is great for killing vehicles or big blobs that rely on cover to not die). The troops are pretty straight ahead, not sold on the Tervigon but I have it painted and it isn't any worse than the Tyranid Warriors I would trade it for! Genestealers are still bad, and I may regret them, but having some outflanking troops to get onto objectives on the opposite side of the board is important given how slow the rest of my scoring units are. The Exocrine gives me a marginal amount of AP2 to tackle Terminators/Riptides (in theory), and can add his firepower to taking down transports and the sort too. He has a mighty 24" range which is long for bugs, so I like that. The Carnifex brood is probably the quirkiest unit, but I've used it on and off for the past few years... it's not foolproof, but it's freaking awesome. Dishes out a ton of firepower at range, hard to assault because of the crazy overwatch (causes 9 wounds to T4), and once you get into melee with them they're still S9 carnifexen. Folks either prioritize them, and fail to take on my flyers before its too late (or gun for my relatively weak Tervigon who holds down my backfield). Or, they don't prioritize them and then they delete a unit or two before people have the "Oh @#$% I gotta kill those things!" moment. But either way, they're fun to play so I'm pumped to have them.
It's hard... not A++, but a solid A- that will hopefully keep me on par with where my 40k game has been the past few years. Who knows!
