I know this has been mentioned in other posts....just how good these two are together.
But I was hoping for some advice as I build a list of Space marines as to which units will work well together, what spells have synergy, etc. Since I'm a big ole noob.
Also, my army builder subscription was allowed to lapse and I don't want to pay another 40 dollars for the software again, is there a way to just renew and pay less?
Thanks!
Tom

Not much help with army builder, I'm afraid.
Tau allies kind of depend on what you want them to do. Broadside Battlesuits (the Heavy Support guys loaded out with missiles) and Riptide Battlesuits (the Elite giant super mech) are the standout units... Pathfinders have really good synergy, but only with Tau so are likely unnecessary as allies. For troops, you could either get some blocks of Fire Warriors and try to leverage their pew-pew... another option would be getting cheap Kroot units, to give you really low cost guys to sit on your backfield objectives and not compromise your combat strength (you don't want a full 200-point unit of Tactical Marines roasting marshmellows at home base while everyone else is out dying... let the 60 point Kroot do it!). An Ethereal is a good HQ choice, as he's cheap and can buff some of the shooty. Another great option would be a Battlesuit commander... he can get some really cool utility gear (like Batman!), which lets him hand out special rules to the unit he joins. Can grant Hit and Run, Tank Hunter/Monster Hunter, reroll to hits; cool stuff like that (would be really brutal in a big block of Centurions!). You have to be a bit more intentional about him, he needs a definite use, but could work well.
Those are the "competitive" options, I think (it's been almost 8 months since I seriously played 40k, so I may not be reliable). Fortunately, the competitive options are also some of the coolest looking ones in the Tau book imo. I'm even looking at eventually picking up a Riptide to run with my Black Templars.

Hard to speak in generalization on that.
Commander is good.
Kroot are good, not just as deckchairs but a unit of 20 puts out a tremendous amount of firepower, is dirt cheap, and with ethereal (or other Ld help) are hard to remove.
Riptides aren't all that killy, but are tough as hell to get rid of, deceptively fast, have a lot of versatility
Broadsides with HYMP (drones optional) are obnoxiously killy.
Typically the allied contingents I've seen (with Eldar primarily) is a buff-commander, a riptide, a fat broadside unit, and two small kroot units. Lots of firepower and utility there, though that's about 800 points give or take.

The Space Marine list I had in mind is going to be something inspired by the Air Cavalry in Apocalypse now. Lost of flying, lots of marines and scouts dropping from the sky. So I think mobile battle suits and heavy artillery would be preferred. I don't want to make a super competitive list, but something that is fun to play, fast, and annoying for an opponent to deal with.
I think the Broadsides would be cool to try out, along with some of the crisis suits. What are good weapons loadouts for the suits?
Battlesuit commander sounds fun. As did Bob's discussion in the other SM thread about thunderfire cannons, which seem neat
