What Brian said. My list?
Flying Dakka Tyrant 14 Hormagaunts 14 Hormagaunts 20 Termigants with 10 Devourers 20 Termigants with 10 Devourers 3 Warriors, Barbed strangler, Deathspitter x 2, Rending claws x3 Haruspex 3 Hive Guard Harpy x/ Heavy Venom Cannon 10 Gargoyles Dakkafex Brood Mawloc
Dakkafex facebeater is good.
The rest is kinda hard to say in a mirror match. I think the Tervigon in many lists might be necessary as it is perhaps the hardest synapse to take out. Might even be worth the points for regeneration.
I'm a big fan of Devilgants right now. Sprinkling 5-10 per brood I think is necessary unless you are talking strictly deck chain, though a full 30 outflanking could be the nasty business (90 18" BS3 S4 shots, 45 hits, 20-30 wounds on most units, thats 7 dead MEQ).
There may be something to running walking Tyrants with guards, keeps the synapse very safe.
Its hard to get everything you need in one list. You need scoring units, you need synapse (and it ain't cheap) and you need some punch.
If the game had ended on turn 5 Brian would have walked away with the game, Something like 10 - 2, but the most ridiculous die roll every had the game teetering in the balance at the top of turn 6, and proved fatal for Hive Fleet Jackalope by the bottom of turn 6.

Brian, Mawloc is S6 AP2, not AP3...eats broadsides and centurions...still does mawloc tricks for objective missions.

So, the list I *want* to play is this one:
230-Dakkaflyrant 230-Dakkaflyrant 110-2x Hive Guard 110-2x Hive Guard 45-Venomthrope 100-3x Warriors, Barbed Strangler 70-5x Genestealers 120-20x Gants, 10x Devourers 120-20x Gants, 10x Devourers 120-20x Gants, 10x Devourers 40-10x Gants 135-Harpy 170-Exocrine 170-Exocrine 450-3x Dakkafexen 95-Bastion w/Comms Relay 2220
Unfortunately, it's also 220 points over. Could drop the Harpy, but then have to free up another 80 points... drop a Flyrant for a Prime to go with the Carnifex (probably safer synapse that way too), trim some gants to break even. Could drop the comms relay too. I like that. A not so shabby fearless gunline with monstrous creature durability, a large part of which enjoys shrouded cover saves, and some serious teeth in melee. Not sure how it would fare against Taudar (trying to outshoot armies that can shoot better than you generally seems like a bad plan), but I think it's a strong force to waltz into midfield with and try to control the game. Those gaunts units can dish out 40 S4 shots at close range, too... that's enough dead Marines to force a morale check. Only thing I would need to buy for that is another Exocrine (or convert one... my converted Carnifex -> Tervigon certainly wouldn't minded being repurposed).
The other idea I'm really liking is this:
230-Dakkaflyrant 230-Dakkaflyrant 45-Venomthrope 100-3x Tyranid Warriors, Barbed Strangler 80-20x Gants 80-20x Gants 80-20x Gants 70-5x Genestealers 135-Harpy 135-Harpy 155-Hive Crone 140-Mawloc 140-Mawloc 140-Mawloc 95-Bastion, comms relay 1855
5 flying bugs and 3 mawlocs is a whole lot of monstrous creature that can get wherever I want them. Really good for disrupting, gumming up castles/gunlines, and being all around annoying... hopefully they can wreak enough havoc that my troops can casually wait out the game and score for the win. Really mobile, not too many models, lots of wacky craziness... along the lines of Sean's old null-deployment list. I would need two more flyers and another Mawloc, so this would be more expensive to put together but could be pretty sweet.
Still need to test modules and see how they work -- the Bastion/Venomthrope/Warrior synapse/cover package sounds good in theory, but not sure how well it will hold up in practice. Same with the minimum unit of Genestealers, who I want to use for outflanking on my opponent's backfield objectives (since I don't trust the gaunts to get there alive). Have to start playing games and trying this stuff out.
On the whole, I'm less down about the book overall... I still think there are lots of missed opportunities, but I think that it's functional enough to give a good game and offer some interesting, engaging list designs. Real swarm heavy builds could do really well, and I haven't even scratched the surface of that type of army yet.

Sexy looking list.
To get it at exactly 1850 you could Drop the strangler from warriors. Taking it a slightly different direction you could also drop the Genestealers and give a tyrant hive commander and drop some devil gaunts in one of those gaunt units with the left over points.
