"Nobody should have any illusion about the possibility of gaining military superiority over RussiaKhador. We will never allow this to happen." -Vladimir PutinTzepesci
It wouldn't be a Brian-Khador thread if there wasn't a quote from some crazy Russia leader, right?
So, while my Minions stint at the last Gamer's Gambit tournament was fun; I found myself dearly missing Khador. There are so many different warcasters and units I want to try! However, I'm trying to keep a strong line up of "tournament" casters with who I can seriously compete with that. I also want to try and include the characters, warjacks, units, and models I like most; while making sure my lists can cover a variety of different match ups and scenarios. Here's what I'm looking at (the battlecollege links to the warcasters are included, so you can check out what they do):
1] eSorscha (Forward Kommander Sorscha)
battlecollege.wikispaces.com/mkiiSorscha2
Points: 50/50
Forward Kommander Sorscha (*6pts)
* Conquest (19pts)
* Sylys Wyshnalyrr, the Seeker (2pts)
Great Bears of Gallowswood (5pts)
Greylord Outriders (Leader and 4 Grunts) (9pts)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt (4pts)
Widowmakers (Leader and 3 Grunts) (4pts)
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* Winter Guard Infantry Officer & Standard (2pts)
Harlan Versh (2pts)
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich (2pts)
Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator (1pts)
I think that eSorscha was the third caster that I bought for the game, so I've been playing her since 2010! She's such a versatile warcaster, and I really like everything that she does at this point. Her list is designated as my Cryx match up, so needs to be equipped to kill lots of infantry. To that end, I pack in a Winterguard Deathstar which can dish out 12 boosted spray attacks. I also have a unit of Greylord Outriders, to add more sprays to the mix (they can also move up -> spray -> fall back with their end-of-activation light cavalry move). Casting the Iron Flesh spell on either of those units makes them seriously hard to shift. The Widowmakers give me some direct fire spot removal weapons, the Great Bears of Gallowswood are there to crack heavy armor if it comes up, and Aiyanna and Holt can buff my damage output while also contributing their own firepower. I really like including the Conquest with Sorscha -- it's a bit of deadweight, especially since Cryx can kill warjacks so easily, but I love the model and Sorscha really turns it up to 11. She can bond with it, allowing me to give it 4 focus and freeze enemy models that end their activations near it. On Sorscha's feat turn, it scraps almost any heavy warjack in the game with zero focus. Gross. Sylys and Reinholdt are there to help Sorscha cast Freezing Grip, a spell which can make a whole unit stationary; and Harlan Versh adds a quad iron and upkeep hate to the list. Since stationary models are automatically hit, Versh and Sorscha can use their quadirons to kill 4 models each! They'll knock out a whole unit between the two of them. While this list is geared to take on Cryx, it's really versatile. I think it manages to handle the Khador mirror match pretty well too.
2] Butcher3 (Orsus Zoktavir, the Butcher Unleashed)
battlecollege.wikispaces.com/Butcher3
Points: 50/50
Kommander Zoktavir, The Butcher Unleashed (*4pts)
* Beast-09 (11pts)
* War dog (1pts)
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts) (10pts)
Iron Fang Pikemen (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Black Dragon Officer & Standard (2pts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution (3pts)
Iron Fang Kovnik (2pts)
Kovnik Andrei Malakov (3pts)
* Grolar (9pts)
Madelyn Corbeau, Ordic Courtesan (2pts)
Ogrun Bokur (3pts)
Butcher3 is the new kid on the block, and probably Khador's strongest caster at this point in time. His personal threat range is insane (he can potentially kill something 21" away), and he has the stats to back it up. He can clear out entire infantry units, or blow up two warbeasts on his own, or rocket across the field and assassinate my opponent by himself (which is what usually happens!). He has Ironfang Pikemen to give himself a credible melee threat, that can move up the field pretty well; and Nyss Hunters to add some ranged firepower to the list (they're no slouches in melee either). Butcher takes Beast 09 for himself, since Beast is pretty self-sufficient and doesn't need the focus (it helps that I made a sweet conversion too!); while I use the new novice warcaster Andrei to run another warjack. I'm not convinced Andrei is the best use of points with Butcher, but I have the cool special edition model from the Kickstarter so want to use him. The rest of the list are support solos to help keep Butcher safe and help him do his job. Butcher can handle almost any match up, and is particularly good at killing Colossals. He's not a big fan of armies that can shut down spellcasting though... by far the most flexible of my casters, but will generally prefer to avoid Circle Orboros, Protectorate of Menoth, and Cryx.
3] Vlad3 (Vladimir Tzepesci, the Great Prince of Umbrey)
battlecollege.wikispaces.com/Vladimir3
Points: 50/50
Tiers: 4 [Charge of the Horselords]
Vladimir Tzepesci, Great Prince of Umbrey (*5pts)
* Drago (7pts)
* Spriggan (9pts)
* War dog (1pts)
Greylord Outriders (Leader and 4 Grunts) (9pts)
Iron Fang Uhlans (Leader and 2 Grunts) (7pts)
Iron Fang Uhlans (Leader and 2 Grunts) (7pts)
Fenris (5pts)
Man-o-war Drakhun (with dismount) (5pts)
Man-o-war Drakhun (with dismount) (5pts)
Vlad is my favorite character in the game, and I've been running him since the beginning. I can't stand the thought of not having him in my rotation! I like all of his versions (pVlad is who I learned the game on, and really solid; eVlad has served me quite well in the past too); but Vlad3 is the version I have the most recent practice with. Most people expect to play against a bunch of single wound infantry when they take on Khador, which is largely true: this Vlad3 list functions as a bit of a Dark Horse, as it's composed entirely of large based multiwound models with good armor! This is Vlad's theme force, with all cavalry. It will struggle against very high model count armies, or forces that can stack a lot of armor; but in return many lists will struggle with it. Did I mention it's fast? Every model in the army is past the center of the table on turn 1! This list is less about answering questions and focuses more on asking them: can you handle this super fast, hard to shift cavalry force before I win the game on scenario (which is what Vlad ideally wants to be doing)? It's assassination threat is good too, with some weird nonlinear abilities from side step on feat turn. Vlad himself is no slouch -- he can chew through blocks of infantry as well as Butcher, but stacks strength and armor as he does it.
______
So, these are my "competitive" lists for the forseeable future. I'll be tweaking them as I get some practice in, and receive any feedback from other folks. I have so many ideas for other casters and combinations that I'm eager to try as well, some for casual play and others to step in for tournament play. Now, to find time to actually play! You guys gotta get on Vassal!
