So my wife has let me go for broke, and attend two tournaments in two weeks. Both are LW, and both are 1420.
I have learned some lessons from my drubbing at the New England Regional.
1. Most players are going for Always defends and Always attacks. Anything in the middle is going to be at a disadvantage.
2. Straight Confident Veteran British Infantry is too expensive by itself to allow for either a big enough force, or a decisive advantage in equipment.
3. Artillery by itself can't do the job, especially when its point cost is almost 1/2 your force at the veteran level
So, I've got two lists to choose from. I always appreciate feedback, and I wanted to see what folks thought would be better of these two options.
#1 - 51st Highland Division - Reluctant Veterans
Cmd 1ic w/bagpiper
1 - Full Rifle
2- Full Rifle
3- 3 Universal Carriers
4- 4 6pdrs
5- 4 mark III Mortars
6- 3 crocodiles (con-trained)
7- Full Breaching Group (3 Sherman Crabs + 2 AVRE + 2 AVRE) (con-trained)
8- Full Breaching Group (3 Sherman Crabs + 2 AVRE + 2 AVRE) (con-trained)
8 platoons before deployment, 12 platoons afterwards.
I am always attack, but with the Crocs I lose night attack. I also think that in half on scenarios I am not allowed to hold a breaching group in reserve? But I can sub out the AVREs for 2 Shermans. Which would give me 2 5tank platoons of Sherman crab flails. And I count as a fully mechanized company when calculating mobile reserves. Which I think Means I get to keep 2 mobile platoons on the table in a half off scenario....that isn't bad. note that none of the armor can assault, since its engineering equipment, but it probably shouldn't be doing that anyway. It should be flaming stuff and digging it out of holes. I also think getting to 8 platoons is a huge deal. I tried this out on Vince last weekend, and he couldn't deal with the volume of tanks. he was playing with small platoons, had to keep 1/2 his stuff off in one scenario, and inflicted a lot of losses with his 76mm guns in the second game, but I think I could have just ditched the AVRES for Shermans and avoided any major platoon losses. (my losses were all AVREs)
Option #2
cmd 1ic + bagpiper (troop carrier)
1- Full Rifle (with 3 ton trucks)
2- Full Rifle (with 3 ton trucks)
3- 4 6pdrs w/lloyd carriers
4-3 Crocs (con-trained)
5-3 Crocs (Con trained)
6-4 25pdrs (w transports)
6 platoons - 1420 pts
Everything is technically mobile, not that having transports has ever done an allied army any good in my experience. Except for US halftracks, which are situational.
I give up 2 platoons on paper for another set of crocs. 6 Front Armor 13 Tanks is nothing to sneeze at, and the 30 Flamethrower Shots are horrifying to behold. In a half on, I would keep the infantry, and 6pdrs or 25pdrs, but against tanks, I could still take the Crocs, with their FA 13, AT10 ROF2 semi-indirectfire and watch British tanks win a gun duel for once.
The only obstacle for this list is I don't have 6 crocs, I only have 3. I would gladly paint your crocs for your Kevin? if you'll let me borrow them this time around? I also think this list would struggle if it lost the roll off to defend against an always attacks list (like Japanese), but maybe I'm wrong?
I have been told that there are some fortified lists to expect in the tournament down in Sommerville, so maybe take the breaching groups? I'll have to playtest the double Crocs at least once though.
I am also quite vulnerable against air. but Every list is going to have a weakness, and I feel like I won't see an alarming number of planes at 1420. (Vince aside
