I know they want to do a Warhammer Fantasy league this year at D20 Revolutions where I play to follow up the 40K league (which I have been absent from the past month - who would have thought sculpting an army from scratch would be so time consuming ) Right now, the only thing I know about what I want to do for the fantasy league is that I'm not scuplting any damn miniatures for it I've got so many armies for WFB, it makes choosing one difficult, so I've decided to plan out all ten (!!! !!!) of the different armies I can potentially field, breaking down the pros and cons of each. Of course, I'm probably going to end up doing vampires or skaven anyway, but I figure this would be a fun exercise to see how I would go with each army and weigh the good and bad of it, and maybe I'll even be surprised and want to go with something totally different then what I'm expecting. Besides, it's a nice easy thing to do on my laptop while sitting out here in the sun in my lounge chair, drinking my Saturday morning coffee and enjoying the nice breeze on my patio. (so glad there's an expletive blocker on this site now ;D ) So over the last few weeks I've jotted down some parameters in the battered little notepad I bring with me whereever I go. I've come up with several categories to rate each of my armies in, and since there are ten armies, each category will have a rating of 1-10, and there will be no numbers repeated, so I'll basically be ranking the armies in each category. The categories are (and Dante feel free to use these when debating the next army you want to work on for a few weeks ) Asskickery - the estimated strength and competitiveness of the army and the list in particular. Of course, since this is me, only one or two of my lists could probably be considered a 'hard list' (daemons and dark elves I'm thinking) with the majority merely being 'not too shabby' and a couple more ranging into the realm of 'I can't believe I spent hundreds of hours of my life building and painting you losers' Boner-Inducingness - This is the rating of how visually awesome the army is (or could be for those that have yet to be fully painted) This takes into account number of conversions, painting, whether an army 'pops' with vibrant or shiny colors, the basing, and display base (if there is one already, or if not, what it would most likely look like) Blood Selling Quota - Or 'how am I going to pay for all of this?'. For most of these I have all of the models already, though some of them I need to buy a unit or two, and then paint and basing materials factor in for those armies that still have a lot of painting to be done, and finally the new codex for those couple armies I have which have gotten a new one in the past couple years. I am planning on trying to get some money together to pick up the Island of Blood set just to throw the store some business (since I wouldn't be buying a lot of models for any of these armies) and to get the small easy to reference book, so I'm not including that here. Marriage Busting Profile - How many hours of my life this is going to take up to build the sucker and get it on the table and how much time I'm going to spend on the other couch painting or modelling while Mrs Carnivean is watching TV PITA Factor - As a nod to Bob's favorite acronym, the PITA factor basically represents an abundance of annoying army rules that can bog down the game (such as animosity rolls and random moves for 18 different night goblin fanatics) or how difficult an army is to set up (when I used Kingdom of the Zombies it literally took me an hour before and after each game to set up and put away the 150+ zombies and other models) how difficult an army is to transport (things like chariots and screaming bell/plague furnace tend to be bulky and fragile) and finally models (usually metal) that have a tendancy to not stand up, lose pieces, or chip paint easily. and finally.. Again with the Daemons - This category represents the novelty for me of the army. Is it a well I've gone to many times before (or at least recently) or an army that would be like an old friend I haven't seen in years, or something that I've never really used at all (or painted up and then only used a couple of times), or possibly an old favorite with a new angle or new codex (like the vampires) I was going to have another category here to represent 'fun' but I think PITA Factor and Again With the Daemons pretty much end up doing the same thing, so kept it to six. And that's it. I'm going to try and post a new army profile each week. I've still got some coffee left here so I'm going to try and tweak one on Army Builder and maybe have the first profile to present in a little while. Cheers, Dr. C

Okay I had this army built on AB already so it was just a matter of writing the post for it. The first Army of Death and Suck is.. The SkavenThe first up in the WFB army parade is one of the three that are currently in a Death Star II state of completion. Starting with the list (I don't have a cool name for the army yet, but will probably come up with one at some point while working to finish it) Skaven - 2500 ptsVermin LordPlague Priest (general) Plague Furnace, Talisman of Preservation, Rat Hound Bodyguardx50 Clanrats w full commandDoomflayer weapon teamx30 Stormvermin w full commandRatling Gun weapon teamx50 Skaven Slaves w pawleader & musicianx40 Giant Rats w x4 packmastersx30 Plague Monks w full commandShroud of Dripping Deathx6 Rat Ogres w master bred ogre & 2 packmastersx6 Poison Wind Globadiers w bombardierDeath GlobeHell Pit AbominationSo there's the list. LOTS of models. I'm still working on this army after having gutted my old 2000 pt 6th ed painted skaven army. When it's done, though it will probably be the most model heavy of all my fantasy armies. How do I think it ranks against the others? Kickassery - 7 of 10I haven't played the skaven yet with the new codex they got in 2009 or with the new 8th ed rules, but I know they like hordes a lot, and this list definitely has some big hordes in it, with five big huge blocks of troops that will most likely be taking Ld tests on a 10 most of the time. Very light on characters and items (my WoC army is pretty much just the opposite) but I don't think it really needs it. It seems to me that this list would be fairly solid. The only of my lists that I think would be more competitive would be the daemons (naturally), probably the dark elves and maybe either the vampires or the warriors of chaos. Boner Inducingness - 5 of 10As one of the more recent armies I've done (am still working on actually), the painting is going to probably end up being better in general than many of my other armies. They also get a lot of visual points for the themed bases I'm doing for the big mobs of troops. Being skaven though, they are kind of drab in color and I've never liked bright color schemes for skaven so there isn't going to be any red armor or anything like that on them (although I do want to make the warpstone stuff really stand out). They're also one of the only armies on this list without any conversions - the models themselves are pretty much all straight out of the box with no modifications. It was this fact mostly that put them in the bottom half of the 10 armies for visual appearance. Blood Selling Quota - 5 of 10I've got the book already, and all of the models with the exception of the Doom Flayer. I still have to paint about 70% of them so paint and materials for the bases get taken into account. Also, I have the old metal stormvermin (all the same pose except for the command squad) so I would probably want to pick up a stormvermin kit just because, although if I plan to try and pick up Island of Blood no matter which army I choose, I'll have the stormvermin from that, so I guess the '6' here is isn't a static rating and I might eventually change it to a better score. Marraige Busting Profile - 8 of 10Again, I still have to paint about 70% of the army, including - touch up paint on 35 skaven slaves, in addition to doing the thematic bases for them to get them to a 50 strong unit. - thematic bases and touch up paint (or assemble and paint) stormvermin - thematic bases and paint plaguemonks - paint plague furnace - paint poison wind globadiers - thematic base & paint vermin lord - assemble and paint hell pit abomination - paint rat ogres So yeah, there's only a couple of these armies that I think would be more work to get on the table. PITA Factor - 9 of 10Lots of models - even with all of the thematic bases that's still a lot of stuff to set up each game. Plus I don't currently have a case for them, so I would have to get or make a new one, and accomodating the plague furnace in a case is going to be a real hassle. I think the only army that would be more of a pain in the neck is the Ghosts N' Goblins orcs&goblins army. Again With The Daemons - 9 of 10Scores really high here, since my old skaven army I think I only ever actually used twice, the last time being more than 5 years ago. Also most of the army is stuff I've never used before (vermin lord, doom flayer, hell pit abomination, poison wind globadiers, plague monks, plague furnace) I think the only one of the ten armies that would be more of a change of pace for me would be the lizardman, which I've never played a game with at all. Average Score - 5.5 of 10After accounting for the fact that 3 of the categories are 'less is better' in terms of the rating, the Skaven ended up with an average rating

lol oh hells no
My Ghosts N' Goblins list ranked highest for visuals but had the highest PITA score and lowest Kickass score. I think that list got even worse with the new book and they were pretty abysmal to begin with. I'll probably eventually revamp the list and swap out the night goblins for legions of spider riders and the big nasty spider then buff up the black ork unit with some thematic bases, but the current incarnation is just one big orange and black basket of suck right now

Okay I decided to pump out another army profile today, because I was curious to see which one scored the best overall using my six category paradigm. That one would be The Army of Lord Horrificus (Warriors of Chaos) Army of Lord Horrificus - 2500 ptsLord Horrificus (chaos lord)mark of nurgle, manticore, shield, crown of everlasting conquest, blade of putrifecation, bronze armor of zhrakkCount Brocken (battle standard bearer)mark of tzeentch, disc of tzeentch, banner of rageOozedrool the Vile (chaos sorcerer)mark of nurgle, chariot, level 2 upgrade, dispel scroll, acid ichorx12 Oozedrool's Wretched Regiment (chaos warriors)mark of nurgle, shield, full command)x12 Knights of the Hellbound Heart (chaos warriors)mark of slaanesh, halberd, shield, full command, rapturous standardx5 Bloodhelms (marauder horsemen)throwing axesx5 Bloodhelms (marauder horsemen)throwing axesx5 chaos houndsx5 chaos houndsTriplas the Everchanging (chariot of chaos)mark of tzeentch Furghus the Debauched (chaos war shrine)mark of slaaneshDr. Shellendrak's Monster (shaggoth)extra hand weaponHellcannonSo I've had to change up the list a lot from what I was fielding in the Forsaken Vale campaign, mostly because of the change from 3+ core units to 25% core units. Still got a lot of my favorites in there but probably lost something in terms of playability. Asskickery - 6 of 10This one was really hard to nail down. It looks like there's a lot of tough stuff in there, but with 3rd ed being more about huge blocks of troops rather than big nasty things, I'm not sure how it fares. I think it's still Warriors of Chaos and they are probably the only ones that can still afford to run small units just because their stuff is so devastating. Between the marauder horsemen and the chaos hounds, I do have some deploy spam and harrassers/charge diverters that should allow me to get the few hard hitting units into the best position possible. Ultimately I figured it would probably be probably in the middle of the pack of the ten armies as far as competitiveness goes. Boner-Inducingness - 9 of 10Here's where they scored big. It definitely looks totally different than anyone elses WoC army is going to look. Between Shellendrak's Monster, Oozedrool, Horrificus, Count Brocken, and Furghus, there's a ton of converted stuff. The hellcannon is straight out of the box, but I took a lot of time to make it really look nice. And the rank and file stuff I have was painted with several shades of color and aren't looking too shabby either. I think the only other army that's going to look better on the table are the Ghosts N' Goblins Blood Selling Quota - 2 of 10Another great score. I've got all the models I need, and I've got the army book, so these guys would be the cheapest way to go. Marriage Busting Profile - 2 of 10All the models are already painted, though I'll probably add some extra details like the standards and stuff, and also need to do some basing, but other than that, Army of Horrificus is all done and ready to rock! PITA Factor - 2 of 10I think the only army I have that's easier to transport and get on the table are the daemons. Again With the Daemons - 2 of 10This is the only category the army scored low in, since I used them in the Forsaken Vale campaign back in 2009. The Ghosts N' Goblins and Daemons are the only ones I've used more recently, and while I've used the vampire counts more extensively, they just got a new codex that I haven't played with yet, so there's some novelty there. Average Score - 7 of 10The second highest score of the ten. It doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to go with them, but they do seem to have a lot of what I'm looking for Well two of the ten down. Since I've mentioned Ghosts N' Goblins a few times so far, I'll probably profile them next sometime later this week. <EDIT>I tinkered with the list again - here is the current version. I ended up having to change some of the ranking numbers around because there's a little more work entailed now than there was before. Army of Lord Horrificus - 2500 ptsLord Horrificus (chaos lord)mark of nurgle, manticore, shield, crown of everlasting conquest, blade of putrifecation, bronze armor of zhrakkCount Brocken (exhalted hero)mark of tzeentch, disc of tzeentch, gold sigil sword, charmed shield, luckstoneDr. Shellendrak's Monster (battle standard bearer) mark of tzeentch, chaos chariot, flail, shield, armor of destiny, bloodcurdling roarx25 Oozedrool's Wretched Regiment (chaos warriors)mark of nurgle, shield, full command, festering shroudx5 Bloodhelms (marauder horsemen)throwing axesx5 Bloodhelms (marauder horsemen)throwing axesx5 chaos houndsx5 chaos houndsx5 Knights of the Hellbound Heartmark of slaanesh, full command, rapturous standardOozedrool the Vile (chaos war shrine)mark of nurgleFurghus the Debauched (chaos war shrine)mark of slaaneshchaos spawnHellcannonBasically what I did was drop one of the two chaos warrior units in order to combine them into one big unit. The downside is that this will now entail more work repainting the slaanesh warriors to look like the nurgle ones.

From a sheer competitive standpoint both of those armies are pretty fluffy. There is quite a bit you could do to really turn up the heat on them.
Would you be using the same list for the whole league?

Actually I don't even know much about it yet. I think it's going to be an escalation league again to give people time to build up their forces, but that's pretty much it. I don't know if the final points are going to be 2500 - I just picked it since it seems to be the standard now in 8th. I also don't know if there are going to be any special restrictions on army composition like there are in the current 40K league. I'm thinking it will have to be the same list for each game played at a given point level, but I suspect it won't be like the 40K league where you have to keep building on the same force, only because it's harder to do that in Fantasy with all of the % stuff than in 40K where you basically only need an HQ and 2 troops and then build from there. As I said in the beginning, these are all my typical armies, so even the ones that scored 7 or 8 only means they're not as crappy as some of my others. 8th ed really screwed up a lot of my armies. With WoC for instance I had to practically use every last core model I had to make the minimum, which kind of limits how I build the army. I've actually got tons of stuff for WoC, but all characters, specials and rares. I think I've got maybe 700 pts of core. With Tomb Kings and Dark Elves, I'm actually going to have to buy another unit box to make my core, and again I won't have any flexibility when it comes to the core troops in the list. Ultimately though, I'm not too worried about competitiveness, since most of the people in the league would be very green players just feeling their way around. Obviously there are still some armies I shouldn't go anywhere near if I want to seriously compete (beastmen come to mind) but I think even a halfway decent list from a solid codex like vamps or WoC is going to be able to play well in this environment. A lot is going to depend on how I finish up the 40K league. If I end up with a losing record, then making sure I win some games in the WFB league will be more important to me, otherwise I probably won't be too concerned with it

Tried reworking the Army of Lord Horrificus a little to see what else I could do with it.
Army of Lord Horrificus - 2500 pts
Lord Horrificus (chaos lord) mark of nurgle, manticore, shield, crown of everlasting conquest, blade of putrifecation, bronze armor of zhrakk
Count Brocken (exhalted hero) mark of tzeentch, disc of tzeentch, gold sigil sword, charmed shield, luckstone
Dr. Shellendrak's Monster (battle standard bearer) mark of tzeentch, chaos chariot, flail, armor of destiny, bloodcurdling roar
x12 Oozedrool's Wretched Regiment (chaos warriors) mark of nurgle, shield, full command)
x12 Order of the Hellbound Heart (chaos warriors) mark of slaanesh, halberd, shield, full command
x5 Bloodhelms (marauder horsemen) throwing axes
x5 Bloodhelms (marauder horsemen) throwing axes
x5 chaos hounds
x5 chaos hounds
x5 Knights of the Hellbound Heart mark of slaanesh, full command, rapturous standard
Oozedrool the Vile (chaos war shrine) mark of nurgle
Furghus the Debauched (chaos war shrine) mark of slaanesh
chaos spawn
Hellcannon
So basically I felt I needed to find something better to do with all of my characters in chariots, since chariots now basically suck in 8th ed. I made oozedrool the second chaos shrine, but had to drop Shellendrak's shaggoth and make him a chariot bound character instead, giving him an armor save of 3+ and then a ward save of 3+, which means he should be able to stick around, especially if he's working in tandem with something else. The bloodcurdling roar I figure can be put to good use whenever he's just getting himself into position for flank charges or just trying to maximize coverage from the battle standard.
I also added in chaos knights and gave Count Brocken some items for combat so that he can join the knight unit for big charges.
Then I added in a spawn just to screw with people, since I know from playing Bob that those damn things are good for just putting in people's way.
To do all this I dropped the casting from the list. I suppose I could make Brocken a caster instead of a combat monkey if I really wanted to add some casting in, or could drop the spawn and the hounds for a caster, but I wasn't really feeling the magic thing with this list, as there was nothing I really wanted to sacrifice in order to get it.

Okay I was going to do one of these a week but now I'm all into it (and trying to put off doing sculpting work this morning) so here comes a third one: Ghosts N' Goblins (orcs & goblins)I was thinking last night while walking Rufus about what I could do with the Ghosts N' Goblins to make them a little better and take advantage of the 8th ed changes a little. Here's what I came up with Ghosts N' Goblins 2500 pt orcs & goblins listThe Goblyn Queen (orc great shaman)orc boar chariot, level 4 upgrade, channeling stone, opal amuletThe Knave of Spiders (goblin battle standard bearer)gigantic spider, shortbow, light armor, spider bannerGauntfield the Scarecrow (black orc big boss)crown of commandBigg Deff & Lyttl Deff (savage orc shaman)dispel scrollx20 Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblins)shortbows, x3 fanaticsx20 Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblins)shortbows, x3 fanaticsx20 Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblins)shortbows, x3 fanaticsx20 Ghosts N' Goblins (night goblins)shortbows, x3 fanaticsx8 Trikkor Treeta Spider Ridas (forest goblin spider riders)shortbowsx8 Trikkor Treeta Spider Ridas (forest goblin spider riders)shortbowsx29 Goblyn Queen's Bodyguard (black orcs)full command, shields, war bannerx4 Hungry Hungry Trolls (trolls)Pumpkin Chukka (goblin rock lobba)Pumpkin Chukka (goblin rock lobba)Ima Eechoo (arachnarok spider)Kickassery - 1 of 10 (very tentative)Now this is tricky, since when I originally ranked all of the armies together, I was using the first list I had made which had ten less black orcs, six more fanatics, and a total of 6 night goblin units with full command and 30 or 40 guys each, and without the arachnarok or the 2 spider rider units. I think this list now is a definite improvement, since it freed up almost 500 pts just by reducing the night goblins down to delivery systems for the fanatics. They all have shortbows now, and I'd be putting them in only two ranks, so now 20 shots from each group. They're obviously going to die as soon as anything comes in contact with them, but that's okay, since with Ld5 they were probably going to be doing that no matter how many points I spent on each unit, since I was never going to be able to keep them all covered by the general's Ld anyway. Now they'll die or run, but the orc and troll units aren't going to give a damn and I'm planning on spreading them out enough that they won't be affecting each other. What I was able to give the list in exchange for trimming the goblin units was more shooting and harassing with the 2 spider rider units, a beefed up black orc unit that is now actually a threat, and a big nasty thing to deal with in the arachnarok. I'm still not sure whether it can beat any of the other nine lists, which is why it stays at a '1' for now, but it's definitely not as abysmal as it was before. Boner Inducingness 10 of 10That display base, the custom sculpted ghost fanatics, orc shaman, and goblyn queen chariot, the pumpkin patch thematic bases, and the general painting with bright colors and the overall Halloween theme definitely make the Ghosts N' Goblins the coolest looking of all of my Fantasy armies. Blood Selling Quota 8 of 10 They were at a 3 before when I only needed the new army book but shot up to a 9 once the $60 spider made it into the list. Fortunately I'd been looking for an excuse to want to pick that spider up since it was first released last year Marraige Busting Factor 5 of 10Again, this used to be a 1, but just shot up to a 6 with the big spider and the spider riders that I'd have to paint. PITA Factor 10 of 10Yup, this army has everything that's a pain in the ass. Animosity rolls, random rolls for a dozen different fanatics, lots of models to set up, big bulky arachnok spider, fragile gigantic spider and chariot, etc Again With The Daemons 3 of 10They were a '2' with the first list I had done for them, but the big spider probably bumps them up past the Army of Lord Horrificus, which doesn't have anything really new, just a couple models being used in different functions. Average Score 4 o f 10Yeah the added work and money really shot this army down into the basement. Still if the league is going to run into the fall, I may actually use them just because of the strong Halloween theme.

Okay really on a roll here now with this (I'm promising myself I'm going to start the sculpting work on the dark eldar after this one ) Tomb KingsI had kind of dismissed the new book, but I think that's mostly because it basically wrecked the army I have for them, making them unfieldable and also making them suck even more. I read a point by point review online and actually saw some cool potential, so went back to Army Builder and built an army as if I had any model I wanted. This is what I came up with. Tomb Kings 2500 pt Tomb King armyTomb Kingchariot, shield, gold sigil sword, armor of destiny, luckstoneLiche Priest (hierophant)skeletal steed, talisman of preservation
Liche Priest skeletal steed, dispel scroll
Tomb Herald (battle standard bearer) chariot, shield, banner of the undying legion
x7 Skeleton Chariots standard bearer, banner of swiftness
x5 Skeleton Horse Archers
x5 Skeleton Horse Archers
x5 Skeleton Horse Archers
x5 Skeleton Horse Archers
Tomb Scorpion
Tomb Scorpion
Khemrian Warsphinx
Khemrian Warsphinx
Sepulchural Stalkers
Heirotitan
Casket of Souls
The damage didn't end up being incredibly bad, and I can do this 2500 pt list with less than $200 pts worth of models (about $150 more than what I would have had to spend just to have the minimum core for 2000 pts and only $100 more that what I would have needed to spend to get to the 2500 pt standard game) and now I feel like I have an army that could be decent.
Asskickery 3 of 10 Again this was a tough one to figure since I've never used anything with the new book before. It seems to work well on paper - you've got the big chariot unit with the healing banner and tomb king with the extra movement banner to help it get into combat. 3d6 Str 6 impact hits for charging at full strength should break a 30 man unit on the charge, and can probably even break larger blocks if charging in tandem with a warsphinx or just rolling well. The two warsphinxes would initially protect the flanks of the chariot unit to keep them from being charged, and then tandem charge with the chariots to break big units, or break away to charge other stuff. 4 horse archer units would be there mainly to get out in front and harass enemy units and divert chargers, especially from the chariot unit that wants to be the one getting the first charge in. The casters are both on steeds so can get in with any of the four horseman units. The hierotitan should help with the casting and then move in to assist other units in combat. The tomb scorpions are mainly there to bury if there's a lot of vunerable stuff behind the enemy lines, or just operate in tandem with bigger, more powerful stuff. The stalkers I would probably bury to pop up behind knights or heavily armored infantry to hit with their cool shooting thing. And the casket is there for casting dice and to for the light of death, as always. But still I have no idea how all that would work in practice. I suspect that it can beat whatever I come up with for Beastmen, and probably the Ghosts N' Goblins list too (although with the changes I just made in that list, I guess that's not a given either) and maybe one or two more of my lists.
Boner-Inducingness 6 of 10 They were a 3 before, but with the warsphinxes and sepulchural stalkers in there looking cool they probably get bumped up past the skaven and daemons. I did that army with a turquoise and orange for the liveries, and then of course there's a lot of gold and stuff, so they're a pretty army that would probably rank higher except for the fact that there aren't many conversions in there (just the tomb king, with the icon bearer probably being a conversion as well) Of course the egyptian theme allows for some cool potential when it comes to a display base, so they could probably eventually pick up some points for that too.
Blood Selling Quota - 10 of 10 Yeah my financial situation would have to really change or I would have to sell a bunch of stuff on ebay in order for me to think about doing these guys, especially considering I'm still going to want to be picking up 2 more raider and a pair of ravagers for my dark eldar before the fall if I want to do a big tourny with them. Basically I would need the book, a stalker kit, 2 warsphynx kits, a horseman kit and a chariot kit, so about $250 worth of stuff after you factor in paints and everything.
Marriage Busting Profile 9 of 10 Yeah these guys would be a real time sink. Maybe even more than my half assembled, 0% painted lizardmen army, just because I know the chariots are a real PITA to paint and then the sphinxes probably have a lot of detail I would want to get right.
PITA Factor 6 of 10 Chariots + big bulky warsphynxes + casket of souls that keeps losing it's parts = suck
Again With The Daemons 8 of 10 New rules, new stuff, and also the fact that I think I've only even used the tomb kings 3 or 4 times to begin with.
Average Score - 4 of 10 Keeping the Ghosts N' Goblins company in the basement. The money and work involved makes it very unlikely I'll be building this army anytime soon, but it's definitely something I would like to do eventually.

Go with ghosts n' goblins because they're cool
I love the spider model and it takes lots of shooting off of your army, but don't hesitate with it and haven't charts ASAP to be effective. Also I say drop the 4 trolls and get 2 mangler squigs. Great models that I'm sure yo would love painting, great rules and fluff, and can demolish an entire unit of ogres in 2 turns, having 2 makes them a muc stronger set up. Also they fit in well with the list idea of spinning death. So get the spider and those guys, would be amazing but expensive ( it's ok I need 1 more squig to get there so don't feel bad if you buy that set up). My 2cents
