Tim and I both use Tamiya clear red, which Craig also carries. I have no experience with the new GW Blood for the Blood God stuff, but from what I've seen the Tamiya Clear Red is a bit brighter/high gloss which yields a better effect in my opinion. I have no intention of switching over to the GW product. I think the gore effects will look particularly good on that Spawning Vessel!
As for fire blasts, I think eerie green would look cool, not as sure about purple but could work out well. If it was my stuff, I would go for orange -- more like a true fireball, but more orange than red or yellow. I think that would look really good with the pale blue/brown carapace you already have going on. It gives you some warm colors to balance out the cool colors (which is why I use blue for the glow effects on my jacks/warcasters, to help balance the warm gold/red).
Tim will give you better advice for lighting effects -- I think it's mostly airbrush stuff. I've done a tiny bit of it on the eyes of my warcasters -- I don't hate it, but don't love the effect either. Not sure how to make it look good with a brush.

The Tamiya Clear Red gives a better "fresh blood" effect. The fact that it's clear red also really helps not really lose any of your previous paint effects. The GW stuff is nice, I actually like it. It is a LOT darker though and isn't clear, so it will be the only thing you see. Brian's right, though it is gloss it's not quite as high gloss as the clear red. I used both for my Nightmare model. I did the Blood for the Blood God first, then went over that in the clear red. It gave it a nice mid-tone color but the clear red gloss definitely makes it pop more.
