Back in the days when Bob was still a fixture at the store he used to take many of us on a gaming journey to many game systems. The American Civil War for one. Hail Ceasar for another. And while I know we are all involved in a lot of different game systems already, I've read too much history this past year and I am sucked in to a new period. I ordered my box set of AWI infantry this weekend, and Shane and I will be testing out some rules in the next few weeks. I'm working on getting my guys painted up, and am curious to wade through black powder, Sharp Practice 2, and others. I'm doing this in 28mm, since I haven't painted a lot at this scale and could use a challenge. I'm looking at getting minis from Warlord Games as well as Perry miniatures. Anyone else interested in tagging along for a game in a little bit once I get these figures assembled, let me know, I'm excited to paint up some casualties and bright blue American Uniforms. If Shane gets his way, we'd still have the Queen on our money and the union jack flying overhead. Help me fight for America. Join the cause:)

Vince was telling me you and Shane were getting into this. I am very interested. I love the black powder rules. If you two are going to really start playing this I will most likely get into it too. Can you give a link to this online so I can start looking into factions and models. Thanks

Awesome post, Tom, I can’t wait to start this! If anyone else wants to join, this is the perfect time – we are literally starting from scratch, so it’s going to be a new adventure for everyone involved. Randy, I know how much you love the painting aspect of the hobby, and I can tell you from my Napoleonic wandering, this era is easily the most rewarding to paint. Nothing looks better than disciplined rows of finely uniformed redcoats! In terms of models, we are both starting with the British and Continental Army starter sets from Warlord Games – they’re available much cheaper on eBay. Have a look here: us-store.warlordgames.com/collections/american-war-of-independence-1776-1783

Definitely the woodland indians for me. Let me know when you are going to get together and play.

I was looking at the link above. The book "Rebellion" is a supplement. Is that the only book I would need or is there another in addition to Rebellion?

Thanks Shane. I saw that Rebellion was a supplement and figured there was another book I needed to buy.

You can always borrow from me - I'd focus on the models first, these guys take some time to paint!

A model list would be under the supplement? So if I just get a supplement for now I can see what I need model wise and make an army list?

Yes, you can definitely do that. In terms of lists the rules are pretty flexible. Basing is more important.
Skirmishers go on single 20mm bases, 4 line infantry go on a 40mm base, and 2 cavalry go on a 50mm base. In Black Powder at least, commanders are more markers than combat models, the rules say you can put them on any base. I have mine on the big ones, then you make more of a modeling scene.

Okay I have purchase Rebellion. I took a quick look through and looks like a lot of interesting historical reading. It looks pretty strict on battles. How to set up the table and what armies to play. I didn't see the traditional army lists that I am used to. How are we planning to play? Is there a point list somewhere?

So, the battles that are described in Rebellion! are recreations of famous battles. They have specific army lists. We absolutely don't need to play these, they're pretty strict, and require a heck of a lot of models. I would use this book as a resource guide and source of inspiration.
In terms of points, the cool thing about Black Powder is it's a lot more flexible than a typical wargame like FOW or 40K. The idea is players can both agree what to bring to a game. There is a basic points system calculator in the main Black Powder rulebook, which I can copy for you. It works kinda like the Hail Caesar system.
Tom and I have both bought the Colonial and British starter sets. They both contain comparable armies. I would start there, but look on eBay, they're much cheaper.
I know you mentioned liking the Woodland Indians - I think they're meant to be more of an allie to a Col/Brit force, rather than a standalone army. If you do just want the natives, you could be an ally to one of us.

Yeah, I figured that. Vince wants to play the Colonials so maybe I will go British. I see the British starter set has some woodland indians.
Are you and or Tom going to be at the shop tomorrow, saturday? We could go over it all before I start buying.

YES! I'll bring my starter boxed set too, so you can look at it. The Brits do indeed have Indians in the set, they're great sculpts. If you're dead-set on having a smaller force of just Indians, take a look at the Muskets and Tomahawks ruleset - similar to Saga I believe.

There are a number of battles we could set up that involvearly the indians. Paticulalry in upstate ny. The battle of orkisany for one. Fort stanwick. And even attacks around fort Ticonderoga and in the champaign valley. Most of those are as British allies, but some tribes do fight for the americans.
I'm really excited to get painting. My box set should come tomorrow or sunday. We will start with black powder rules for sure. But I'm going to scour the interwebs and see what others might strike our fancy. Small games to start and then we'll see if we can make a few big fun ones of our own.
Randy, I may commision some terrain from you if you're up for it. And let me know if there is anything you want me to pick up or look for at fall in in 2 weeks.
