Jason,
Will "painted" armies be a requirement for this campaign?

I was thinking about it over the weekend actually and I was honestly conflicted over it. As a player I prefer playing against painted armies in any type of competition because I tend to spend a lot of time myself painting my army and I also tend to lose a lot and seeing your painstakingly painted troops consistantly lose to spray-primered hordes just hurts a lot more. On the other hand, since this is going to be a club thing it's a more casual environment and we also want it to be open and accessable to everyone in the club. I want people in the club who want to play to be able to play. (well, ok, maybe 'cept for that Snapple guy) Another aspect that will be making this campaign more informal than a typical league or tournament is many of the battles that take place will be played on people's own time at people's houses or online using that Vassal-like system. Finally, since a lot of the club players are 40K'ers who are just beginning to migrate into WFB territory, it's in the interest to those of us who are more hard core Fantasy players with the multiple painted armies to bear with people while they're getting their first armies completed, so that we will have more opponents to play games with. All that being said, I'd like to ask everyone interested in playing in the summer campaign to post a reply here just to give me an idea of how much of their fantasy army is unpainted (or incomplete) at this point and how things are coming along. I'm not going to require that armies used in the campaign be totally painted, but am going to strongly encourage that people shoot for having a fair amount done before the start of the campaign and try to have them completed at some point over the summer. Everyone should keep in mind that they will have at least another two months before they will even fight their first battle, so there's still a lot of time for painting for those who really want to have everything finished before their first game. Also I am going to ask that people who do play some battles with armies 'under construction' make sure their opponent can easily tell what he's fighting. Spearmen should have spears, for instance. If the entire unit isn't assembled yet, at least make sure the first couple ranks are. If you're using a dragon, there needs to be an actual dragon (or dragon-like thing) on the appropriate base. (In my previous league I had my big chaos dwarf unit flank-charged by a pewter griffin leg lying on an unpainted large monster base - this was the 300 pt general, mind you) I'm planning on doing a couple of optional participation multi-player skirmish games during the campaign in which players may compete for things that will give their empire some kind of benefit. For these games, painting WILL be mandatory, since there would only be a handful of models. Also the terrain will be very in depth and thematic, so I'll be looking to get some nice pictures to post on our site. Lastly, (and I have a feeling this ended up being one of Dr. Carnivean's typical 'Wall of Text's)I do want to acknowledge the people who have painted their armies, as it does show a serious commitment of time. In a past league I had run years back I imposed a 'no rank bonuses for unpainted miniatures' rule, but as I said before, we all know each other here, so I don't think such a severe in-game penalty is needed. What I will instead include as a campaign 'house' rule - which can disregarded if both players agree to - is that in a battle actually played out on a tabletop, if a player with a painted army is playing one that has one or more unpainted units, he may choose who takes first turn as if he had won the die roll, without actually having a roll off.

I think your house rule is pretty fair. I'm actually having trouble deciding what army to play in this upcoming campaign... unfortunatly I know very little about fantasy, Hopefully tonight I can get some pointers on which direction I should start down.

I dig the house rule.
For Fantasy I *may* be able to get my entire army up and running/painted. The problem is, I hate painting and am not good at it. I find myself most inspired to paint when combined with playing, if I'm running my Warriors of Chaos every week I'm going to want to start painting them so they look nice.
I think making it a requirement would suck, as I probably wouldn't be able to participate. However, I think the House Rule is certainly fair and know that once things start going I would do everything in my power to get the army looking cohesive.
Another question, what is the competitive level we're looking at here? I know Bob is using his Khornecows which I think are beatable, and I know that some of us will have little Fantasy experience. Do some people plan on running cheezy win at all cost-style lists, or can we amongst the Ordo agree to downplay things a bit and use some interesting/balanced lists? I'm not suggesting to totally cripple your list, but not taking that really cheap or annoying HQ character, or min maxing on a billion Chaos hound-type units like people might in a tournament might make it more fun overall.

No Brian, I've instead decided to play my Daemon. Including a Bloodthirster, 4 units of Fleshhounds, minimum core, and two units of flamers! Muhahah!
Kidding, I'm hooked on the minos.
I LOVE the bonus idea for painted army!
Jason, I'm definitely commited to playing this campaign this summer. I have about 20% painted now, no basing done. Nothing got done over the last week, was too sick, but with fewer high-point-cost models I don't forsee any problem with painting being done by summer.

Don't forget to throw in Skulltaker and his 150 points of "I can kill anything you've got on the table" Then I can bring my friend in Watertown's vampire count list with lord on zombie dragon, blood knights with regeneration bsb banner and banner that doubles unit strength, banshee unit, black knights grave guard and spirit hosts, and about 240 points worth of zombie and skeleton core and two 65 point necromancers with invocation of nehek. And that was just a 2000 point list!! I don't even want to know what kind of insanity he would have had with an extra 250 points! Seriously though, while I have a feeling Bob is going to start doing much better with the Khornecows once they hit the 2000 mark and he get's his doombull and other big nasties in there, no-one is using demons, which is probably the easiest to get a really sick army. Vampire counts can get real cheesy too, as I mentioned, but I think the only player that would be doing them is Chris, and from the armies of his I've seen, he tends not to use much of the shamelessly overpowered stuff. All of the other armies you can make powerful lists if you're creative or clever about it, and some armies do very well against some other armies, but from what I'm seeing of the armies and lists so far involved, I don't think anyone will walk over everyone else just based on army composition.

Jason, when do you think this will start? I ask because the second week of summer vacation I have to go to a camp for a week.

This will probably start in the beginning of June, but don't worry about being away for a week - since players won't be actually fighting a battle each week-long game turn, it won't be a problem for people who may be away at different times this summer. People who are going away can just e-mail their orders in as usual and then if two armies should happen to meet, the army of the player who is away can just retreat to an adjacant territory. The only time when all players will be required to be present is the opening session, where we will be picking HQ territories on the map and going through a number of game turns until the first armies meet up with each other. I'm going to ask around before I schedule that session to make sure it's on a day where no-one has conflicts.

I'm sure we could work something out for that. You could always just give me your turn orders in advance in a sealed envelope - I wouldn't peek

Don't worry, I'll make sure I have some kind of system set up so that people who are going away on vacation or to camp won't miss out too badly from being gone for a week or so.

My nephew has been wanting to learn how to play warhammer, but has been hesitant about getting into another hobby that consumed lots of money, especially since he and his wife had their first baby this fall. I mentioned to him last night that I have a bunch of painted older models that I don't use in my armies anymore that I can do a decent list with, and asked if he would be interested in playing in the summer campaign if I gave him an army to use so he wouldn't have to buy anything. He said he's love to, so I'm going to start putting together a vampire counts list for him. (Don't worry, there won't be any blood knights or the dreadlance/red fury combo) I've got spirit hosts, bat swarms, dire wolves, banshee, tomb wraiths, black knights, and the old school carriont that would make great fell bats, then a bunch of older skeleton and ghoul models and some various character stuff. I'm thinking of a nice big unit of skeletons with the regen banner and a couple of wight kings in there to give them some oomph, then a nice casty vamp general and maybe a necro or another wight king in with the black knights. Or do the wight kings in a black knight unit and the vamp general in another. I just like the idea of a pair of wight kings working together, and I haven't really used any in a list in a while, and with the recent upgrade to 3 wounds, they are tempting. I'll post a list when I start working on it. In the meantime, I'll bring Rob by one of the gaming nights to see some games and maybe get a tutorial.
