I'm going to be starting work on the campaign map this weekend, drawing it out on regular paper and and then starting work on watercolor paper. I'm trying to decide what size to do it in, and am looking for suggestions. Myself, I would like to do on a nice big piece of watercolor - something that can be unfurled and layed out on a table for everyone to see during our sessions, and so that actual minis can be used to represent banners on the board, and so on. Also the larger I make it, the better the images I draw will look when shrunk down on the computer to the size I will be using and updating on the website to show the current status. (I did my 40K Legion of the Kraken banner that way) My worry is that if I make it really big, how am I going to get it scanned into the computer, since it will be way to big for my scanner. I guess I could always take a pic with our digital camera, but I'm sure some of the detail would be lost. I know they have big scanning machines- I've used one that scans blueprints when I was working for a contracting company - but does anyone know where you can pay to have something like that done? Does Staples or any of those places have machines that you can scan posters and stuff into and get the image put on a disk.

lol, you do remember that I work in the engineering business right??? Whenever we have to get plans copied or turned digital we take them to a place called Merritt. Its over near Exit 2 on 84. Im not totally sure what formats they can digitize it into but im sure a phone call would answer that for us.

Heh, yeah I should have remembered it, and I also remember ordering the paper reams from Merritt for the blueprint machines. Over on Lake Ave. I'll have to check that out to see what formats they can do. How much of a charge is it to do usually?

depending on the complexitity, anywhere from $5 to $25. But that also counts the cost of reprinting whatever I needed copied so it could be even cheaper.

That sounds good - thanks Eric! I'll go with a big map then. I was looking over the list of participants and I think I'm going to actually have to have more territories than the Border Princes map that came with the General's Compendium. For the campaign they did with that map, I think they had around 8 players, and there were 100 territories on the map. Since it looks like we'll be having 12 or 13 players, I think I'm going to make a 148 territory map. 90% of them won't be named or anything, so it shouldn't be any more work, and actually it will be good that I'll be drawing a big map, since it will keep each territory from being too small.

Hm...
Another alternative would be to have a beautiful, elaborate map that we used more for show that you could bring to each gathering or could even be left hanging up in the shop to attract attention.
Then, have a digital version of the map done on microsoft paint or whatever. This digital version would be easy to post/email around and would probably be faster/more efficient, as well as clearly showing details (outlining a ton of little territories on the big map might detract from the coolness of it).
So yeah. Perhaps making an awesome map that looks like it's a satellite picture, then scanning it into a computer and adding the grid/territories there would work well. The digitized version would be very specific and easier to keep track of territories and armies, while the pretty one could be left on display and show approximations of where armies are and stuff. Just an idea, creating a "practical" version and then a really nice "showy" version would be cool. Might be cheaper than rescanning the map every week when positions have changed.

I think that is a really good idea.

Oh I don't plan on rescanning it to show positions. Once I scan it in the first time, I'll have my basic template that I can modify each turn with the new positions. I plan on just making some kind of logo or banner for each army that I can copy/paste onto the territories. Then like a 'fire' symbol or something for a territory that has been razed.

I'm glad everyone's getting real excited about this - I'm really looking forward to it as well. I think we're all going to have a good time with it this summer.

I started working on the map last night. I've got about a third of more of the pencil drawing done, and then after it's all drawn in pencil, I'll have to do the lettering and numbering before I start with the watercolors. I'm going to look around online for some caligraphy sites I can use for reference when I do the lettering.

You're welcome! And thanks to you and everyone else for all the compliments on the stuff I've unveiled so far. Here's the rough MS Paint sketch of the map that I did that I'm now using to go by as I draw out the big version As you can see there are going to be a lot of territories for people to conquer!

Green spots being capitals? Cool. Any significance to the castle in the middle?
The place in the upper lefthand corner is the death star territory right? That could be very potent...

Castle in the middle is the death star territory - it can raze everything along the rivers (almost 50 territories)
