Two colors i find the hardest to paint are gold and red imo. More highlighting and some shading/layering will really make the cape pop i thinks.

There's a bit of layering in the cape (I painted it scab red, thinned down blood red on all but the darkest parts, and a little brighter blood red on the lips of the cape... black wash in the creases to make them darker, then red wash on the whole cape), but it's not too great. The bad pictures obscure most of that.
The model is super anorexic, definitely weird... the face is weird, I just need to touch up his eyes and give more detail to the hair and it won't look as bad. The worst is the sword -- I was super lazy with that, and it looks really bad. Overall, I'm not as frustrated as I was last night -- most of it is me just not liking the color scheme. I don't like the burnished gold effect. I need to find a bronze or something a little darker(richer?) to match up better with the armor.
Going to start the juggernaut tonight -- anxious about seeing how his red armor comes out!

Here we go! I've only painted the torso/head of this guy, but I'm super happy with the red. Need a few touch ups where the wash dripped over too much, and then I'll be bringing the rest of the model up to speed. Have to start experimenting with weathering ideas/techniques which will be the interesting part... regardless, I'm happy with the stock Khador red with black trim. It just looks right. Any thoughts? Once I finish this guy, I'll probably paint up my unit of Demo Corps to refine the technique and get some solid practice in with it. Then, I'll finish my battlebox! EDIT: Man this lighting sucks. I promise it looks better in person.

Terrible late-night dorm lighting, but here's the latest update on the Juggernaut... I brought the arms up to speed, and have basecoated all the metal areas on the model with tin bitz. Going to go back and figure out what to make silver, what to make gold (and how to get a good gold that blends with the red), and leave a bit of tin bitz in the recesses/to help distinguish the different metal parts from each other. Once I get the metals down, a bit more highlighting... then the fine details (the badge, the eye slit things?, and the ice axe). Finally... we move into weathering! I'm excited to try out the weathering, and I think it'll go a long way towards making a decent model look really good. Still trying to figure out some color stuff... currently I still have some of the grey in the recesses of the model (noticeable on the legs, or the back shot of the boiler housing), which I think looks pretty good. Not sure how it matches up with the black trim though... trying to decide if I should make the grey parts black to blend it, make the grey parts metal (At which point the majority of the model is metallics), make the black parts red (and in a roundabout way get the red and grey scheme I initially set out for); or something totally different. Need to look at some online inspiration, but any thoughts from you guys are much appreciated (granted, it'll be hard to see much in these photos).

Looking sharp. I like the idea of doing the black parts a sort of grey. Right now the black parts kinda look like its unfinished. Once the model is done and based it would be so bad but black sometimes just looks unfinished. That red and grey (bluish grey if you ask me =) color scheme is sexy.
Nicely done.

Thanks guys!
Yeah, I haven't done any highlighting on the black -- am hoping that, maybe some numeric freehand on the shoulders, and battle damage would help it look "finished". I don't mind the grey as much on warjacks, but I think black will look better than grey for trim on my warcasters. Did some research online, and it seems most people paint what I currently have grey red or metallic instead. May consider experimenting with that.

I like metallic black over straight black for large areas. That's what I use for my cryx, though I actually use it on the small joints. When I painted my dark elf horses many moons ago, I mixed in very small amounts of mithril silver to chaos black. It gave them a very light shine to make it look like their hair was glistening from running. It might work well on your jacks too. If nothing else, it takes away the flat black look. A little silver goes a long way in that instance.

Bri I just wanted to say that I had to turn the laptop around to Mrs. Carnivean just now and say "see, Brian's girlfriend paints warhammer stuff with him". At which point she stuck her tongue out at me. She also had to say "that's cause you guys keep basing them black instead of using lighter colors". They just doesn't know the power of the dark side.. I love "marshmallow" though. She should do a whole marshmallow chapter of the space marines. Also, really nice work for a first timer. That jack is looking pretty impressive as well. You getting ready to start doing weathering effects?

Dang, my post disappeared. Not sure what happened. The weathering is going to look good, don't overhype it, just paint it on randomly with focus on where you think the damage and wear would take place.
Alayna's marine looks very bueno as well. She is going to be an amazing mini painter if she keeps it up if this is her starting level. Just remember to thin your paints. Two thin coats > one thick coat.
Time to start the freehand!

Can start the weathering tomorrow, since the rest of the model is painted. I'll post before and after pics then... ironically Tim, I've actually done some freehand on this warjack! I painted the Khador anvil on top of the boiler hatch, and some numbers/Khadoran script on the black shoulder pads to make them pop a little bit. Not the cleanest/best job, but at least it's freehand. I think the Destroyer will go much faster than the Juggernaut -- I know how to paint these things now, so should have an easier time cranking that out. Alayna appreciates the compliments, guys She has a few more details to paint, and a couple more Marines to keep practicing on. I'm coming to realize not everyone knows what you mean when you say "The bolter casing is normally black" or "You can paint some silver on the backpack vents" or "What color do you want to paint the eye lenses" haha.
