Alright, to make good on this newfangled Pledge I'm setting up a WIP board to keep track of what I'm painting. I want to start with the Escape from Goblin Town set I bought myself as an early Christmas present. Speaking of Christmas presents, this came in the mail yesterday too... Glamdring, the Foehammer! I love Games Workshop's LotR game, it has some great skirmish rules and works on a really fun scale. Nobody at Hobbytown plays it, but a few of my highschool friends were into it... it's been nice to revisit the models and game for the new Hobbit movie! Anyways, I spent some time earlier in the week building the set, and primed it in the basement one morning after the family had left. The perks of being a college kid home for break! I've started with the goblins... after touching up the white, I slathered on a flesh wash to bring out the details and start on their sickly, pale skin color. Then, I drybrushed Bleached Bone on to pick out the natural highlights and make the models less pinkish. (I think this picture is pre-drybrush). Next step is a few more washes to shade the creases a bit more, and add some color to the boils and particularly gross deformations. There's 36 standard goblins, the King, and three captains in the set... a lot of guys, so I'm less worried about perfect quality and more interested in having them all look good as a horde together. Thorin's Company will get more attention, surely! Though, I've got to say the "prime white + add washes" method of painting is wonderfully easy and really fun for novice painters like myself... I really wish I had caught onto that earlier for my other wargaming projects! Tim was kind enough to show me some painting tricks today during hobby time, so I'm thinking about what I want to tackle next... either prettying up my Tyranids to get a better paint score, or finding a way to highlight/weather the black armor for my Space Marines. I'm excited for both projects, and trying to force myself to stay focused on Goblin Town before I deviate.

The flesh wash trick does look good. I've never played any variation of the LotR games. You'll have to teach me some time.
What are your plans for the bases?
Edit: Also that sword is awesome!

My plan is to get the EfGT set painted up to use for demo/pick up games. The basic rules are light enough to be played almost as a board game, pretty easy to grasp and play with. Not sure if the scenarios are well balanced but I'll find out! I'm currently half way through painting teeth/hair... After that, it's 2-3 coats for the weapons and 2 coats for the eyes, and then a final black wash on the teeth/hair/metal... still have some work ahead of me! My goal is to finish the goblins by Sunday night, as I'm having some friends over to play LotR on Monday. I want to use my newly painted goblins! I rushed ahead to finish one guy, to show the finished product: For bases, it'll be a brown rim and grey/black rocks for the top. I want a dark base to help the models pop even more, while balancing their cave dwelling nature with the wooden platforms of their underground kingdom. This is likely the same basing that Thorin's Company will receive as well. C&C? I'm trying to find a way to make the eyes pop more... Not sure if I should include pupils on the eyes, I don't have faith that I can pull it off well enough and like the idea of an ominous yellow glow. I was thinking of maybe trying some different washes to get more definition at the edges of the eyes, or maybe digging into old paints to find a really bright yellow to highlight with. Any thoughts?

Looking really good. Those sores are gross. The yellow eyes are nice as well. Do you have any yellow paint? Do you have white paint? Get that yellow damn near white and paint the eye. Then water down the yellow very thi , basically a wash to clean the edges if the white eye. Don't paint pupils. Pupils on glowing eyes look kinda silly.

The fact that your parents bought you Gandalf's Sword makes them even more awesome than I already knew they were. And the Goblins look good. I like the models, and if I win the lotto, I'll be sure to jump into another game system. I'm looking forward to seeing these come along. I also really enjoyed going to Tim's place. Tim, you're a great resource for crafting and painting tips, it was informative and fun, thanks for all the materials and advice!

I agree, sword buying parents rock. I had a great time hobbying with you guys as well. We'll have to do it again.

Yeah, I second Mullane -- hobby day at your house was awesome Tim thanks a ton for the tips, ideas, and bits! I'll definitely try out your suggestion on the eyes. Also agreed that my parents are awesome for getting me Gandalf's sword haha. It looks far better on my wall than in a troll cave! This is as far as I was willing to get tonight on the goblins: The rank and file guys just need to be based and have their eyes painted (and maybe some quick touchups, but I'm trying to go a bit looser with these models). The Great Goblin and the Scribe have a bit more work/attention to detail. But still, they look coherent/cohesive enough for tomorrow's battle! Here's what the board looks like. This is a view from the side -- 3 objectives, one in the forest, one in the ruins, and one in the center. Lots of terrain and fun stuff, the skirmish rules make it easy to have individual trees, hills, ledges, and allow models to interact with them. Good and Evil will be divided into teams of three (Harad, Easterlings/Mordor, and Goblins on one team; Elves or Rangers, Dwarves, and Gondor on another), each individual player getting 350 points -- enough for some rank and file, a solid hero or two, and some toys like cavalry, trolls, or specialists. Hoping to get some good pictures tomorrow!

Coming along nicely. It is a very cohesive force.
Nice little table you have there. I'd be interested in giving the game a try sometime.

Okay, so my goblins just need eyes and some basing and they're all set. Hoping to get them all finished before I head back to school in a week and a half... however, I've had to turn my attention to more pressing hobby concerns: getting my GK wysiwyg for Stratford. These are my justicars, using the new plastics -- most of the army is second hand metal models. These guys have giant swords, cool helmets, and I gave them the fancy teleporting backpacks to further indicate that they're a channel for the squad's psychic energy. I've been chopping off halberds and replacing them with falchions (a more suitably sized one handed weapon, at least!). Terminator hands are too big which makes it a bit awkward, so I'm experimenting with just sticking the sword on right above the hand. A bit uglier, but this is a gaming army first and foremost. Here's most of the army (and Bob's Soul Grinder!), missing the IG allies and rhinos. I have a great fw model for the xenos inquisitor, and will have a terrible proxy for Coteaz (have to suck it up and get the Finecast one). Paladins are set and wysiwig (just need to reglue some hands), though desperately in need of a new paint job! I'm trying to figure out what to do with these metal GK... not sure if I should strip the paint on them (which is one of my least favorite hobbying things and I never get good results) or just paint over and let it be. Letting my standards drop a bit may be nice, will help me crank out the army faster at least!

I have some simple green should you desire to strip models. That stuff works amazingly well.
Those justicars are rad, stupid wrist mounted storm bolters. Maybe I need a grey knight army, storm bolters are one of my favorite weapons, just behind the heady bolter and assault cannon.
Hobby Friday?

Yeah, you can't go wrong with GK allies Tim... I pulled out everything that I needed for Sunday, so beyond a few more sword conversions/making one more psycannon dude, the GK are ready for the table!

It's a little hard to see in the pictures but does look good what you can see. They might benefit from the tiniest splash of very white yellow on the center of the eye. But forget all that. It's time to play!
